causes in order of likeliness

1) leaky petrol tap
to fix it take the tap off, and remove the 2 screws, pop down to your local plumbing supplies shop and replace the o-ring, assembly is the reverse of disassembly
2) perished fuel lines
replace the lot, cost is less that a tenner, 1meter/3.3feet should be enough, 2lines from tank to tap, 1 from tap to pump and 1 from pump to carbs
3) carb float bowl gaskets leaking
if you've had your carbs apart chances are these havent sealed or need replacing

worst case.....
4) petrol tank ....rusty/cracked etc

ah, cheers Tony.

When I got my MkII, it had been stood forabout 10 months, and had a nice stain as described. i'll investigate it at some point, i think it'll be either 1) or 2) thats causing it as i've not had the carbs apart (I don't think the previous owner had either) and I've had the tank off to change the thermostat, no rust or damage on there.

At least its nothing major! rolleyes.gif

It might be your fuel pump ! There is a vacuum pipe from the fuel pump that goes to the inlet on the No1 Cylinder (the one thats on the same side you use to get onto your bike) If there is a tiny hole in the pump diaphragm or if the pump casings aren't tightly closed, petrol will leak along the pipe and rest at the lowest point. So what happens is you get a load of neat fuel dumping itself into the cylinder which then either fouls the plug, or makes it too hot resulting in a knackered plug.
It's a bit tricky removing the vacuum pipe from the intake but it can be done. If you can get it off and also remove it from the clip you can then lower the pipe and see if any fuel is there. It's also worth having a smell ! In my case the pump casing screws were pretty loose, not had a problem since I tightened them. I was going through a plug a month !
You may need to remove the tank if you can't get the vac pipe off dry.gif

DON'T GIVE UP YET, IT'LL BE WORTH IT ONCE IT'S RUNNING OK....... BELIEVE ME !

Yes, mine used to stink of petrol. And yes it will still leak into the vacuum pipe when the tap is off.
The fuel pump is in 2 halves, the top half is where the fuel from the tank goes to and it then goes out to the tap.The bottom half is used for the vacuum pressure. The two halves are separated by the thin black rubber diaphragm and if it has a hole in it the fuel leaks from the top into the bottom part. This can also happen if the two halves aren't tightened enough.
I can post some photos if that'll help you.
