(Nothing personal Alan
Ahh, '86 Gixxers....
Thanks to all for the help. Will try the blue spots, once I have stripped them and cleaned them, with the 850 m/cyl. I will let you all know how it goes.
All now a fond (very fond) memory. Maybe again some day.

i've looked at pics of blue spots on ebay and there appear to be different types, i assume from different years/models.
I'm looking to upgrade my calipers to blues sports, so what bike/year/model number do i need for my mk1 that fit on directly without any modifications?
Its booked in for a service on 1st August and matey bhoy the mechanic will fit them for me if they dont require any mods (nb: i dont want to do these myself).
...and is it worth putting braided hoses on at the same time?

Tony...any bluespots will fit (and the 6 piston clappers from the YZF750)......they're all the same pitch between the bolts..........only ones which don't fit are the latest radial clappers off the R1.
Looking forward to meeting you at the weekend .

Looking forward to meeting you at the weekend .
As Dandy man says any blue spots fit.
The later R'1 have gold spots, now the early gold spots fit (04 models I think) later ones don't, these are the Radial ones. Gold ones are like rocking horse pooh and are ferzackerly the same as the blue ones mechanically.
I believe there are 2 types of blue spots, the two piece ones as fitted to early thunder cats, these can be differentiated by the metal pipe linking the two parts of the caliper. The one piece ones don't have this pipe.
The one piece ones are supposed to be the better ones.
I got my calipers from MI Salvage
Thig is when I got mine they were only £50. They don't tell you on the webby that they add VAT and courier shipping to that price (£10) so the £60 quickly becomes £82:25, the courier is next day though
I would recommend using Ebay and waiting till a cheap set pop up. I did buy another set of Ebay for £32 cos the gimp had spelt caliper wrong, use www.fatfingers.com put in caliper and then get it to perform a search for you.
Here you go, some ebay links:
The right blue spots
the wrong gold spots
The right gold spots, £50 for one!!!
more blueis
more blueis
These blueis look pukka
You get the gist, there are shed loads of blue spots on there. Personally I wouldn't pay more than £60 for a pair and that includes shipping.

I put you down the wrong path with the 2 piece info martin - they're actually all 1 piece, just that Thundercat ones have the pipe to the outside. Also the goldspots which fit the TDM have alloy pistons

I have still not got round to fitting mine yet. Will you be fitting yours soon? Will you strip them first? Will you be using the standard 850 m/cyl? I am interested to know how you get on.

Aye they are all the right type. the wrong ones will be for 05/06 bikes and late 04 R1's and will have gold spots.
The way you can tell if the are the wrong ones is the mountings. The wrong type have the mounting bolt holes going from back to front on the caliper, the right type have the mounting holes going left to right.
Also the newer (wrong) type are more compact.
Look at the following pictures, the bluespots have the correct mountings, the goldspots have the wrong mountings. So just as long as you get calipers with the same mountings as the bluespots in the picture, you'll be fine. I think the general rule of thum is, if they have bluespots they are good, goldspots they are not good.

They do make Gold-spots that fit too, the radial one's won't fit, but there are some that fit.

yeah, i saw a few that looked the same.
i read a few of the previous posts/topics/forums/websites and the only difference I can find mentioned between the blue and gold spots (that fit) is alloy pistons. is this correct? and is it worth the extra?
£50-60 for blue, £100 for gold.

Aye they do, that's why I said general rule of thumb.
The 04 R1 had the new radial goldspots fitted. The last of the older shape R1's had the original 100mm mounting calipers but with the gold spot.
I can't see having alloy pistons will make the calipers perform better it will just make them ounces lighter, perhaps they will react quicker having less mass to move
Here is a picture of the radial gold spots fitted, you can see how the mountings on the caliper differ:

The loop over, ie the stock, method is banned from drag racing in favour of the two straight lines. There is a reason for this.
I have had many problems bleeding the loop over set up, mostly on Gixers, as an air bubble can get trapped. I have made my own hoses several times and have always gone for the dual line setup, air floats to the top and can sometimes be bled through the banjo. I cannot recomend the latter system highly enough.
Hope this very definite, but humble, opinion helps.
All now a fond (very fond) memory. Maybe again some day.

I've been contemplating changing my current 1 - 2 braided setup to a 2 - 2 setup. Bleeding the current setup is a real biatch
