care to share what kind of paint are you using?

Can't remember the brand or type. The Base coat has some fairly strong acid in it and the clearcoat has cyanide in it, so coal-filter mask is essential when painting.

The colours are base white and black with no additional colour, and the yellow pearl is same as used on new Nissans.
The clearcoat is 'extra heavy', meaning it contains a lot of solids and can be applied quite thick without running. I only needed 3 coats before first sanding.

I'll see if i can find info on brand and type of paint.

Like everyone else, I think it looks fantastic and look forward to seeing the completed bike.

Does the paint need to be applied at a specific temperature or baked after application?

More paint info:

All the paint products are from PPG, they are all using the same solvent and made so that you don't need to wait for complete hardening before applying the next product. All products are Acrylic except the clearcoat wich is 'polyurethane compound'...but still called 'acrylic'.

I found a professional airgun system and these paints MUCH easier to work with than aerosol cans. Easier to get even layers without the paint running.

This type of paint doesn't require any special treatment for hardening, but the acrylic colour paint requires a clearcoat with added hardener. The paint with colour pigments doesn't harden by itself. Ideal (but not required) painting temperature is 20 deg C.

AAAAARRRRRGGHHH!

on the FINAL layer of clearcoat I managed to get runs in the paint.

Oh, well, buddy with the paintshop will show me how to fix it.

I also tried a side panel on, just to see:

Colour looks MUCH better in sunlight.

Yea, for my buddy it will be cake, a case of beer and a bottle of bubblies.

I didn't wan't to let the bolts decide where to go with the pattern, and the holes are impossible to mask, so i ended up painting that part yellow.

The running was worse than i thought, apparently paint has an 'avalanche' effect, so if it first starts, you get quite a lot. I have to let the clearcoat harden for a day or two more.

In the meantime here is a pic, of the whole side pattern.

Paint result:

Result fixed:

Further down:

...and after more sanding and polishing:

The running clearcoat was fixed by first scraping off most of the drops with a sharp knife, then wet-sanded with 2000grit paper, then coarse polished and fine polished. Both the scraping and the sanding has to be done VERY carefully because when sanding over a rised area there is a high risk of sanding off too much AROUND the area you want to remove.

End result was perfect. MUCH shinier than after just the paint. The clearcoat was like glass and the patterns got a 3-d effect.
It looked so good i decided to give all the other parts the same treatment with sanding and 2-stage polishing.
....as if i hadn't enough work dry.gif

Now EVERYTHING is wet sanded, and I'm spening the evenings polishing parts. Boring work, but i hope it's worth it.

I was soooo relieved my buddy managed to fix the runs in the paint. I'm overjoyed. I'm gonna make him a cake like suggested further up here.

And the bike is mean to be USED. A little rain won't stop me.

If i kept the bike inside at first sign of a cloud, I wouldn't be able to ride it at all.

Thanks for the encouragement everyone. It's definately more fun doing this kind of thing when you get a bit of feedback. Especially when it's about 10x more work than calculated.

Finished polishing and brought the parts home today.

My brother is vistiting from across the country, so It's a bit a-social to sit in the garage now.

Pics to come shortly.
