2002 TDM900 ECU recall question

Hi all,
I'm a nOOb to the TDM world and am considering buying a used 2002 TDM 900 that's on auction here (private sale). I've read something on this site referring to a recall on some 2002 models to sort the ECU's injection setting. I'm in Japan and the TDM 900 is only available as a re-import model, i.e., there no official Yamaha support, only local dealer support and I have no idea what dealer this bike is from as it's an auction sale. I'd like to know how can I tell if the TDM I'm considering falls into the recall batch (it was first sold in Oct. 2002) and if so, whether it has had the recall done? Does Yamaha have any info on what specific batches of TDMs need the recall (frame numbers, etc?)

Welcome Jim. There was NO RECALL for the 900 ECU, certainly in the UK anyway. This is just a myth that somehow has been taken onboard as fact. Some bikes have had their ECU's replaced under warranty.

There is a big thread on it here: http://www.carpe-tdm...topic.php?t=465 that might help, it mentions a frame number which is supposed to indicate the cut off point for potentially troublesome ECU's.

I have a November-registed 2002 TDM900, and the previous owner, who has kept meticulous documentation, has left no info. re recalls.... hopefully underlining the previous post re. this topic!

Thanks for the help, guys. The frame number cut off is 2435. How would I look for this number in the context of the entire frame number (which I'm hoping the seller will share with me) as the number on the bike is much longer than 4 digits.

You may also check the ECU part number : it starts with "5PS...".
Read the last digit : a "0" means an early ECU from a defective batch, this is normaly solved under warranty.
Any other figure is OK.

I'll vouch fer that JBX. I have spoken to Yamaha's Technical services who say it has nothing to do with frame numbers. Its the '0' or '1' that count. '0' = bad unit.
