The question was more about the reasoning behind that configuration. I can understand that if you have to power pulses closer together, you get a bigger (270 degree) gap, but didn't fully understand his reason as to why Yamaha configure their twins this way. I'll listen again later and see if I get a better understanding second time around.

The main reason they did it with the TRX850 and TDM850 MKII was to make the engine sound and feel more like the Ducati V-twin form that time.
The "big bang" engine in the R1 is designed to optimize grip. Having a longer "dead" period in between ignitions allows the rear tire to better recover from the last bang(s) apparently.

Thats a lot of money and weight but it is the special edition launch model & Yamaha seem to want to cream off the initial demand.
Hopefully we will eventually produce a std production model which without panniers & other extras should shed some weight & if they want it to sell in reasonable volume they have to get the headline price down.

I remember they reconfigured the Motogp bikes to get better traction, but then with four pots that makes sense. So, the 9er has a 90 degree traction edge over the Mk 1, which is nice, but what's all this talk about torque inertia? This would've been where Stormy (RIP) would've chipped in with an extensive technical breakdown. Missing you down here mate biggrin.gif

I like the looks of the new machine well enough, but only when I hold it up against the overblown BMW R1200GS. Form without function bugs me. That Bimmer's vestigal front fender is enough to turn me off the whole bike.

And I love the idea of being able to truly use a bike both on and off road. That's why I've been riding mountain bikes here in Japan for the last twenty-odd years as well. Nothing beats the feeling of freedom you get from leaving the pavement to the traffic once you hit the trailhead.

But. Maybe Japan has influenced my sense of scale, but I just find all the current "adventure bikes" to be so much overkill.

I was looking through a 2010 buyer's guide recently and thinking about the specs I'd like to see in an honest on/off road bike. First and foremost: low weight (all hail Colin Chapman). Preferably the bike would weigh no more than about three times what I do, meaning it would tip the scales at 190kg soaking wet. That would give "normal" riders a chance of maneuvering the thing on trails and in the muck. And picking it up when it inevitably falls over.

Next: reasonable torque and horsepower, in that order. Power is addictive, but less is needed when there's less bike to move. 8kg-m and 80ps would move a light bike with tremendous alacrity and economy. Certainly no more than 750cc should be needed. Third: simple, tough and functional bodywork and protection. Assume the bike is going to hit the ground and plan accordingly.

I think KTM could build this bike almost instantly by downsizing the 990 Adventure. Aprilia could do it too--they come darn close already with the Shiver 750 GT. It's too bad Yamaha had only one target in mind when they designed the new Super Tenere. They certainly have the talent to meet my specs!

Couldn't agree more. I travelled to Northern and Central Africa on a first generation XT 600 Tenere in late eighties which was quick enough on/off-road and even for my 6"6 already rather bulky and damn heavy to dig out of the sand. I then bought a new Super Tenere 750 which, although I strangely liked it, was frankly a incompetent pile of shite: mediocre on-road (vague suspension and scary brakes for how quick it was), bloody awful off-road (too heavvy, too revvy, poor weight distribution and balance, standard set-up totally unsuitable for sand). Build quality was poor too esp. at the price that I paid for my early one. What a shame for a concept that coud have been brilliant!

The new one looks like the same mongrol as the old Super Ten: A super-tourer for commuting office-workers that want to obscure their boring outlook on life and haven't got the cash to buy a BMW X5. Let's hope that at 13.5k (which could buy you 2 new TDM 900's and, when shopping wisely, may leave you some cash for a used XT600) that at least the build-quality is up o scratch. And for the gay fraction of the urban adventurers there is a cheaper and more fashionable alternative in the shape of the new Duc Multistrada laugh.gif

I am just reading MCN's (yeah I know I shouldn't read the toilet paper) artical on the new Tenere & Yamaha's comment on why they are not putting the bike into dealers or offering test ride.

wifgeni.gif Egg sack early! They did this with the V-max, which I can kind of understand as they made very few of them and I bet most went to collectors or posuers who weren't that interested in a test ride. But this is a mainstream bike, up against competition from several competitors, all of whom will let me test ride their offerings before buying. Methinks Yamaha are scrweing this up - big style!

The reasoning was simply to make it sound and feel like a vtwin as opposed to a conventional (boring) parallel twin which would fire at 180 degrees.
The balance shaft is to make up for the imbalance in the firing.
I understand Harleys vibrate badly because they use 120 degree cranks.
The Honda XLV750 is a copy of a Harley motor (built to beat them at dirttrack in 70's) but while it has 45 degree cylinders like the Harley its crank is at 90degrees giving smooth running and a sound like a Ducati (which also has its cylinders at 90 degrees)
I'm certainly no expert so will stand corrected on any of this.
cheers Graeme

I struggle with the concept of the bike, why would you want any bike that doesn't do one thing well, let alone 2 ?

Interesting, when I was in the market for a new 'all purpose' bike at the end of 2007, the TDM was the only one I wasn't able to get a test ride on. I bought it based on owners' reviews mainly as well as a Magazine tester here in OZ who's opinion I trust having known him thru racing for a few years. Out of all the bikes I rode, the only one that felt 'right' the minute I sat on it was the TDM. Maybe the 1200 will be the same? Time will tell laugh.gif

Cheers William from OZ. '07 TDM9.

I would trust the opinion of several owners but not that of a journo, as these are guys that are GIVEN bikes to play with usually with a nice meal & some equally nice accomodation, may be the odd freebie thrown in.

It's worse than that. If a review is too critical they will not be given any more bikes to review in the future.
What do you think a bike-journo will do under the threat that his competition will get all teh scoops and he'll be left working with rumours or re-chewing what his colleagues have written the month before?

The looks of the Duc have grown on me but I think it will be too sporty for my liking, also a bit small/ compact for 2 up touring. But I will find that out when I go take one out for a test ride at my local dealer Mr Yamaha.

Just had a nice email from Yamaha informing me that I can order their nice new Super Ténéré online to collect from my local dealers (without a test ride, or even a look at one in the flesh). Oh, the price? Ł13499 on the road. rotflmmfao.gif
They can take a running jump if that's the best price and buying experience they can offer. I don't think they're going to sell many until they get the price down and get them in some dealers. I detect the hand of the "Marketing" muppets here, trying to sell me an experience, rather than a motorbike.
