It's "normal" for 850 TDMs, it doesn't seem to indicate excesice wear. Mine uses around a litre per 3,000 miles, just as it did 40k ago when I bought my 02 reg Mk2 (just over 60k now).

It wouldn't be too much of a worry if the difference between the min- and max level wasn't around a measily 400 ml (my own estimate with topping up while looking at the watch glass), which isn't much for a dry sump-setup with a nearly 4 litre capacity oil-tank.

Was concerned as the bike sometimes seems a bit reeky when revved hard. Perhaps its just soot build up in the exhaust due to not being able to open it up to much over the winter?

anything between 1litre per 1000-4000miles is normal
it seems to be worse if you cruise at motorway speeds more often
difference between bottom and top of markers is 300-400ml on XTZs, all TDM850s and TRXs

I just bought a TDM. What is the easiest way to check the oil level without a main stand?
Can i use a rear paddock stand, or does it lift the back too much?
Is it really important that the motor is at running temperature ?

That would probably depend on if it's a Mk1, Mk2/2a, or 9er.
On a Mk1 (3VD), just straddle it to hold it upright and check the dipstick.

You could prop the side-stand with a bit of wood so your Mk2 is 'almost' upright. but I would try this:
Get a bud to hold the bike up straight, see where the oil falls in the sight-glass, then try the paddock stand and see if it falls in the same place (may be angled a bit). If they are very close then you can just use the paddock stand by yourself.

Touring Europe a couple of years ago with big motorway miles I was topping up every morning when I put petrol in, getting close to a litre a day. Take a bottle or something with a long nozzle to make topping up easy, I dribbled a lot of oil on forecourts until I found a flexi funnel at the Supermarche. rolleyes.gif
Assuming the oil goe's in the same place on a MK1...

TDM 850 Loud and unusual. CRM 250r Woo hoo! DT 230 Lanza Fiddled with.... Bloody hell, is that legal? GG Randonee AKA "I didn't think that was possible".
