The finishes seem like careless Chinese replikas and the bike itself does not feel completed. However, every control and the body position looks to be just inplace when you sit on it. Apart from the price, TENERE is a bike to be tried to me.
You better decide yourself:

That's blown it then, never get a TDM with a battery that accessible

The dealer has ordered two for Christchurch, expected in June, and which will apparently be equipped with extras to compete with GS's, etc, etc. (We're very excited about them, sir!). I wasn't able to screw a definitive price out of them (not that I tried real hard).
Not that I didn't like the XTZ660 Tenere, but it wouldn't have filled the niche that my MKII does (e.g. I wouldn't have wanted to participate in last weekends TT2000 last weekend on the 660. Piece of cake on the MKII. Ooohhh, where's the cake...).
I can see myself organising a test ride.

No, I'm still oohhing and ahhhing and trying to work out where to lay my hands on Ł13k. And working out how to get it without SWMBO noticing. If only they did it in yellow, she'd probably never notice......

There's been a mention of this before, but I see that Yamaha now ask your opinion of the Super Tenere (I don't think that was there when I last looked).
It is here: http://www.yamaha-mo...amp;i.user2=ENG
It also gives you the opportunity to make your case along the way for a new TDM (if you wish).

I am hoping if I fill it in enough times a week that they will build me a new mkI, without a ridiculously big enjun, with a chain and sprockets and no electrickery gizmos.
Of course by the time they have interpretted it I will have asked for a Tenere with all the bells and whistles, shaft drive and weighing the same as a bus.
No one here has put their name down for the new Tenere yet then??

I suppose a TDM with the new Tenere's seat, tank and fairing would just about do it (it would for me). And no harm in gizmos being on the options list.

Wait to see the super tenere on the roads and then we will decide if it is worth it.
Of course mommy Yamaha says that the first edition will be special and after that the cost will drop.
I will just wait and see. (Although I do not intend to change my bike)
I'm afraid not. Built in Italy. Mines now had to be picked up from the road side twice in a month. It's a beautiful day outside - the best day of the year so far, and I'm bikeless AGAIN!!!
Fantastic fun to ride, great for back roads (not much fun up and down the A12 for 110mile commute per day) TDM is far far better... Though the XT660Z is a more rugged looking bike- aesthetically better I think, and the 21" wheel and long travel means all the crappy pot holes this year just don't exist.
Super Ten is tempting, but Ł13500K when a GS

I have been given first refusal at my local Yam dealer, they have got one coming for the showroom (yes. really. Yam have relented and they are letting dealers have them). But its a lot of wonga, but I'm fed up with the 660 keep breaking down (electrics rectifier again).
Mind you the TDM died too and I had to have the RAC out...maybe I should look at a different brand all together....

Mine has been absolutely reliable so far. Never missed a beat, even through so serious off-road abuse...
But you're right that the TDM is a lot more comfortable for long stretches of highway. But still I found the Ten more than acceptable on my trip to Normandy last year which was about 550km, 200 of which were highway.

I'll let go of my throttle when they pry it from my cold, dead hands...

Couldn't you try a xt 660 rectifier to see if it fits?
I do not know if rectifiers are a general problem for tenere's but here in Greece at least it is considered a reliable bike...

it is the same engine and rectifier... there is a saying in England "third time lucky"...I'm hoping this is true!

they are

mostly for 2 reasons: turns out a lot of them are not properly plugged in from factory

Well it was replaced last month, and when I got the bike back I firstly checked it was plugged in properly (it was) and then I innertuberised it and packed it full of rubber friendly grease. One month later....

That's really

any corrosion on the rec's contacts? Or is it really an internal failure?

Well I hope you get lucky at last.

I didn't know about the rectifier problems of the tenere though...
