Hello All,

I'm Ben and I live on Anglesey in North Wales smile.gif

I've had my 1998 TDM for about 6 years now, but for the last three years it's been slowly rotting away in the garage. A few years back the exhaust rotted through and I didn't have the money at the time to fix it, so the bike was put in the garage where it's been pretty much since. Anyway, I've finally got the urge and the resources so i've started doing it up.

So far i've been busy just with stripping it down. Why is it never as easy as it sounds in the haynes manual! rolleyes.gif laugh.gif

I've never done such an extensive rebuild before so I would appreciate any help that can be given with the inevitable questions that i will face. good.gif

The forum's been really handy so far just for searching through all the info on the site, it's a really good resource.

Anyway, thanks for reading,

Ben smile.gif

Perhaps not next Sunday but I feel the urge to make it happen soon! I also feel like raising the profile of Normandie which most of you only pass through without stopping and enjoying the numerous cakes. In France, each town has a food speciality. Every over town will have a cake speciality. The "Normandy cakes route" may sound attractive for a week end ride and safer than the "Vosges wines route"

Hello

New to the forum ... been biking all my life, with the last 2 years spent on a supermoto.

Originally was sure i was looking for a Mk3 tdm, as on paper looks like a good package ... but the problem is i think i actually prefer the older one in looks ... I know the basics now between models, but i still have a few questions if anyone could help me out ... much appreciated.

1. From old to new, how do the brakes compare ? Miles apart ?
2. Is it essential that both models would need jetting / dyno work / power commander if using cans ... or is it just advisable ?
3. How bad is the gearbox really on the older model ?
4. Do both models use oil ?

Sorry for all the skoolboy questions which i'm sure have been asked many times before ... but any pointers or help would be welcomed.

1) comparing new with new there ain't much difference.
2) no and no in my opinion
3) its fine it just clunks. A few peeps have reported problems jumping out of 3rd.....RUN AWAY if thats the case
4) both mkI and mkII def do. ....and some 9'ers seem to too if ridden hard. The true test of oil use it to go to NOTNs September meet oooop in Scootland.

The newer 900 has Bluespot calipers, the same as the R1 and some other Yamaha bikes, and they're a common modification to the 850's. I really notice the added performance of the bluespots on my Mk1 with a pillion on but riding solo I don't think there's much in it.

1992 Mk1, 76k miles, Hagon springs, MTC exhaust, 4½ gears Gone now :(
2009 900 abs, 42k miles, Yamaha heated grips, double bubble screen, R&G crash bungs, scottoiler, Autocom, 1500 lumen LED spotlights.

Same on my MK2... If you ride solo, don't think you will notice much difference (unless you like trackdays).

Oh and hello Bear!
