Good on ya. Big adventure bikes fill me with fear & doubt of my riding abilities ( that little mental mantra "don't drop it!") but also encourage my mud pig leanings. A recipe for disaster with me at the bars. I get the impression your bike is already 50 polishes better than new

I had a sit on one during the summer. I was impressed by many things but the seating position really cramped my knees which was a big surprise after a 5 hour ride on the TDM.

Out on the fire trails on the weekend with 25 other bikes and the Traction control works so well that even on loose stuff you just cannot get into trouble getting out of corners, in setting one it just stays dead straight and accelerates, in setting 2 you get a little bit of sideways action but still not enough to get into trouble. Just magic, they have done such a good building this bike.

Ya 'Spike' whose a member on the XTZ site here in Gr8 Britain said the traction control and abs was brilliant and some of the techie journalist types reckon they can disable the abs completely by pulling a fuse out or alternatively they can add an aftermarket switch to do the same. sounds loike a good bike but oil be interested to see how much they are new and used in 12 months time.

engine changed july 2007 on a dyno run it made 79.1BHP / Torque 59.9Had a brief flirtation with a 1999 MKIIa but it blew an exaust valve on the M5 so was sold on to be repaired.

How doe's it feel under braking on the loose? Downhill corners on gravel really hammers home the weight of my 850 ( & my road tyres ).

I have seen that and it interesting but pretty expensive, I did have a couple of different trips in mind next year probably over a bit longer distance and time.
So far i have not had the "BMUU run away freight train brakes" yet so maybe yamaha had this one right. i did read if you have the bike on the stand and spin the wheel in 2nd gear it disables the ABS until the next ignition cycle but have not tried it yet myself.

Just as a matter of interest these guys www.adventure-spec.com were at the recent Horizons meet at Ripley showing prototype petrol tank saddles to extend the range of the GS800 by a further 9 litres on top of the std 18 litres. Indicative prices less than half that of the touratec offering.

fine if ya really need the extra range ???? Emmett's 800 GS is amazing on fuel and with the stock tank he feels it's enuf.

Now isn't that interesting...had they done that three months ago I might have considered it along side the KTM...too late now though Mr Yamaha! Putting the price down AFTER everyone has already bought new bikes for this season, is a tad fucking stupid IMHO.

I don't think I'll be getting rid of my F800GS, I'd probably swap My TDM for it, but I don't have the £11,500 extra the trade in would cost.
I'm not in any way affilliated with Carrick Yamaha, just thought some people here might be interested.
My F800GS has a better tank range than Minty Hippos TDM900, and nearly as much as my Fathers 1200gs. If that's not enough Touratech have an auxiliary tank that goes where the petrol tank is on ordinary bike, I think it costs £12,000,000 or thereabouts, but you could always strap a jerry can to the pillion seat.

First thing to say is that this is a very easy bike to ride. As soon as you're moving the weight just disappears. The steering is light and easy and the handling is excellent. The suspension was good, brakes powerful but with good feel. Riding position was very relaxed and the seat much more comfortable than my Mk11. The screen did a great job of keeping the wind off me and no issues with wind noise or buffeting. The power delivery from the engine was smooth and pretty linear with no discernable steps anywhere in the rev range. Th bike has two power modes, touring and sport, but there's not much difference between them. Pick-up in touring mode is a little smoother but I think it's a bit of a gimmick.
There weren't many things I didn't like about the bike but the position of the rear brake pedal was one of them . The pedal itself is pretty small and it's tucked in close the engine. The only way to operate it was to lift my foot off the footrest and hovver it over the brake while pressing down. Not ideal. There were also a few issues about the engine. It was pretty rough in places and at various points the mirrors would blur or you would get some very interesting vibrations through the seat. There was also a bit of a flat spot between 3 -35000 revs, nothing major but noticeable. None of this was mentioned in any of the road tests I've read. Stevie at Ride On reckons that the bike's been extensively abused by the press before being handed out for the potential customers to try and is need of some TLC and a good service. You would have thought if Yamaha were really interested in selling this very expensive bike they would at least have had the good sense to have it well prepped to make as good an impression as possible.
As far as the pillion side is concerned the wife had no complaints. She appreciated the extra room and slightly higher seat that allowed her to have a better view. The seat was more comfortable than the Mk11 and she got less buffeting and wind noise. She did say that at 80mph the wind was creating a bit of vibration in her helmet but that would probably disappear with a bit of tinkering with the screen.
So, all in all a very enjoyable 2hr ride but nothing more than that. The bike did everything expected of it but I wasn't excited by it. I appreciated the extra power for overtaking and the comfort but I didn't get off it wishing I could have another two hours on it. I think if you are going to spend £13,500 on a bike it would have to get you excited and grinning like a lunatic at the end of the ride and trying to work out ways to justify buyng it. That didn't happen and I'll be sticking with the TDM.

Wouldn't you think? I went to a major Renault test drive day - run by Renault, not a dealer. All the cars rattled, and their comment too...I won't type what I said, I'd be banned. Needless to say I didn't by a Renault, it merely confirmed the crappynessness of the interior build. So the Yam enjin runs rough...I won't bother then, if they can't be arsed, I'm sure I can't.
