I would like to get into my head a little bit more detail on which country will be be in on what day.

IE; How many days in France before we hit Italy, I am going to be doing the Stelvio Pass, but then which country after that. How long in Italy. With the understanding that Tony will be Fleeced if he goes near the Swiss borders, are some of us going in or avoiding?
Are we going to be having a 'chill day' where we do no riding and relax or keep touring.

I'm not in panic mode here but want to start looking at google maps for places to see while were passing through

Hi Cats,

I'm definately going to Megatreff, but am seriously thinking about joining you guys on the Grande Tour if I can find the necessary additional euros. Is Tony's mate still thinking of joining the tour.

By Tony's mate I think you mean Tiger Ray. He's not going as he's become an Old Man and doing a Cruise.

I'm sure there was 5 Amigos though? yu.gif

nah theres another essex based mate of mine (not hutch) but wont know til nearer the time
JHT wont be able to do the extended tour, he said if he makes it, it'll be the MT only

i'm planning for no motorway (except where beneficial to get around cities) i would expect night stops something like this:

15th: 23:00 Out on ferry
16th: France, camping somewhere just west of Dijon(-ish)
17th: French/Italian border (last time me & the MadTigerRay found a nice biker friendly lodge on the border, i think i know where it is if you dont want to camp)
18th: Italy, Stelvio(-ish) gotta be a campsite if the weather is good as scenary is lovely
19th: Austria or Southern Germany
20th: Southern Germany (that concentration camp tour? or day off)
21st: Southern Germany
22nd: somewhere between Southern Germany and the MT laugh.gif
23rd: MT11
24th: MT11
25th: MT11
26th: MT11
27th: MT11 or Prague
28th: Prague or Poland
29th: Berlin
30th: Kassel
1st : West Germany maybe the biker B&B near Koblenz
2nd : ???
3rd : home
4th : work sad.gif

NB: when i say 'something like this', i really dont have anything set in stone(or even jelly), i'm quite happy just playing join the squiggles and see where we end up dunno.gif
this planning is the most i ever do more than a night it advance for tours laugh.gif

I never plan more than half an hour ahead rolleyes.gif

I'm with Tony on the keep off the motorways plan, I tend to prefer to a couple of hundred miles a day with plenty of coffee/cake stops.

Pre-meet sounds like a plan Steve. Probably better round someone's house than at a random cafe for internet access, I don't mind hosting when I work out what weekends I've got free.

Bit far for Charlie though, videoconference?

I'm coming home after the MT though, no time for Tony's extra Poland tour.

that route we did back from MT08 was 250miles of pure twisties with plenty of cake stops and took all day
but we did a simialr style of ride up from Matlock Bath to Carlisle for the Scottish G2G last year, less stops but we did manage 470+ miles in a day(300+ of twisties) if memory serves me right
admittedly half of the twisty mileage was spent chasing after HartsideMark but its still possible laugh.gif

I certainly don't want to interfere with your planning, just some information. The season might still be early for the Stelvio. You can always have a current visual status update here: http://webcam.popso..../IT/IDPagina/28

And the "officlal" road status from the authorities (in German): http://www.provinz.b...ex_d.asp?Type=2

Best of luck for your planned trip. I want to see you all safely arriving at the MT site.

It all comes down to a planned route on where were going before the Germany meet.

Spoke to Steve, or was it text? , no we spoke and Steve was unsure on my comment on doing Lake Garda. Pointed out that we are 8 days in front of Bomber Command and will have time to do stuff.

So we need to get a big map out, link it with a calendar, and do some planning, nothing in depth, just what we could achieve

After some post beer mapage last night we've come up with a possible 950 mile route to Lake Garda, should be reasonably easily doable in 3 days assuming we do a bit more mileage the first day as we're off the ferry pretty early. This is avoiding main roads where possible and after Annecy we're in to proper mountain roads. If we're behind schedule we could easily drop a few waypoints to skirt around some wiggly bits, particularly around Milan but that would mean the best part of 100 miles on motorways rather than interesting stuff.

This would mean a lunch stop in Annecy (point 27) rather than camping there though, I know Steve's keen to visit, would you prefer to camp there?

This would mean

Wednesday night - Ferry
Thursday night - somewhere between points 21 and 22 (330 to 375 miles), somewhere around the town of Luzy.
Friday night - Wester Italy, say somewhere near Aosta (point 37, 660 miles)
Saturday night - Lake Garda.

Thinking ride until late afternoon and then start looking for campsites rather than having fixed locations in mind.

Not done any detail beyond that but how about

Sunday night - Lake Garda again having had a day in the mountains (Stelvio etc) with no luggage
Monday night - Salzburg (250-300ish miles) to look around Eagles nest Tuesday morning
Tuesday night - Dachau (150ish miles) to look around Dachau Wednesday morning
Wednesday night- ?
Thursday night - Masserberg

Dachau to Masserberg is about 250 miles so we've got plenty of slack still if we find other stuff to look at on route and drop everything back by a day, I'm thinking maybe an extra night in the mountains and slip Salzburg and Dachau by a day.

Previous experience shows no plan actually survives contact with reality so don't go thinking this anything we're particularly attached to. What do you reckon?
