QUOTE(ChrisG @ Sun 5th Jun 2011, 11:34 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
After some post beer mapage last night we've come up with a possible 950 mile route to Lake Garda, should be reasonably easily doable in 3 days assuming we do a bit more mileage the first day as we're off the ferry pretty early. This is avoiding main roads where possible and after Annecy we're in to proper mountain roads. If we're behind schedule we could easily drop a few waypoints to skirt around some wiggly bits, particularly around Milan but that would mean the best part of 100 miles on motorways rather than interesting stuff.

This would mean a lunch stop in Annecy (point 27) rather than camping there though, I know Steve's keen to visit, would you prefer to camp there?

This would mean

Wednesday night - Ferry
Thursday night - somewhere between points 21 and 22 (330 to 375 miles), somewhere around the town of Luzy.
Friday night - Wester Italy, say somewhere near Aosta (point 37, 660 miles)
Saturday night - Lake Garda.

Thinking ride until late afternoon and then start looking for campsites rather than having fixed locations in mind.

Not done any detail beyond that but how about

Sunday night - Lake Garda again having had a day in the mountains (Stelvio etc) with no luggage
Monday night - Salzburg (250-300ish miles) to look around Eagles nest Tuesday morning
Tuesday night - Dachau (150ish miles) to look around Dachau Wednesday morning
Wednesday night- ?
Thursday night - Masserberg

Dachau to Masserberg is about 250 miles so we've got plenty of slack still if we find other stuff to look at on route and drop everything back by a day, I'm thinking maybe an extra night in the mountains and slip Salzburg and Dachau by a day.
Previous experience shows no plan actually survives contact with reality so don't go thinking this anything we're particularly attached to. What do you reckon?

Yep, thats pretty much what we agreed as I was leaving yours yesterday. What happened to playing in the other Austrian glacia before the eagles nest? However, I don't mind 2 nights at lake Garda. Not too bothered about staying in Annecy, although it is very nice as you will see, and thought we discussed staying near there at some bike friendly place anyhow?
Now on 9er number 2 .....

Forgot about the glacier, where is it again?

Still not found the name of that biker hotel place that I was recommended, might see the guy today though so will ask again if I do.

Oh and I forgot to say I've saved an Autoroute .axe file and a Tomtom .itn file here:
http://www.fieldscie...o.uk/link/MT11/
Right click and save file as if wanted. Not sure what format Martin/Steve's garmins need so let me know the file type if you want a copy to play about with.
Alternatively if you install ITNConverter it will be able to open either of those file formats and has an edit mode where you can play with the map,

About 200 miles north of Lake Garda then. How about Sat/Sun at Lake Garda, Monday near the Glacier (preferably somewhere a little warmer though), then slip Salzburg and Dachau to Tuesday and Wednesday nights, with a 200 mile run from Dachau to Masserberg on the Thursday?

I'm getting excited now, this trip seemed like it was ages away but this weekend it's suddenly become become a lot more real, so to celebrate the fact I've just ordered a GoPro camera. yahoo.gif

Martin can your iPad/notepad whichever you take read SDHC cards so I could use it to transfer files from the camera card to my USB stick or iPod, or had I better bring a card reader?

Decided that the iPad is coming, does all the netbook does and accepts SD/Usb links. I'll bring a cardreader too. Tony's bringing the Big Guns so if mine is shite, we can annoy him in the tent
