TPS Diagnostic Mode

With all the talk about recalls for the TPS I thought this might be interesting. You can use the Diagnostic mode of the clocks to check the operation and adjustment of the TPS.

1. With the ignigition off, press and hold the SELECT and RESET buttons.
2. Turn the ignition on and hold the buttons in for 8 seconds until the display changes to read "DIAG".
3. Release the buttons.
4. Press and hold SELECT and RESET for 2 seconds.

The display will read "d01: XXX"

XXX is a value between 0 and 100. As you twist the throttle you will see this figure change.
XXX represents the percentage of TPS movement, and its approximately equal to the angle of movement of the throttle in degrees.

The manual specifies values for '02 to '04 models as follows:
Throttle Closed: 15 to 17
Throttle Fully Open: 97 to 100.

My TDM reads 16 closed and 99 open.

If your closed and open reading are out of spec then you need to adjust the TPS so they are in spec. You can probably use these reading to adjust the TPS, although Yamaha recommend a different method.

To check the TPS, very slowly rotate the twistgrip so you can see the nubers count up, 16, 17, 18, etc. If the numbers don't change smoothly, or if they suddenly drop or jump, then you've got problem with the TPS.

This test DOES NOT prove beyond doubt that the TPS is OK. The TPS has to operate in a smooth way with the vibration from the engine and bumps from the road, but thats difficult to reproduce in the garage. You could try holding the throttle to a certain point (1/4 open, 1/3 open, etc) and tap the TPS while checking that the reading doesn't jump.

Now thats interesting. As my bike is currently unride-able and I cannot get it to my dealer yet it gives me a chance to check the TPS. Thanx for that.

Mine was checked by the Carrick Motorcycles (your fave place nhstedium ) mechanic when he replaced the TPS - mine is out of range at the top end.....94 - he gave me another throttle body assembly to try which he had under the bench.

this a good test, I'll try it , is the throttle turning bit done with the engine running or not running.
I saw a lot of people walking past a shop yesterday and they were all saying 'ahh' as they went by, then I realised it was a sweet shop , does anyone know if the dealers change items on recall if the bike has been modified.

Not running or you'd rev the b*alls off it.


Can't see why not. If you're talking about the TPS then Yamaha know its possibly faulty so should replace it anyhow.

I do not know how much it helps but in Australia I had a new TPS fitted at no charge to my TDM that has been modified with a set of staintune pipes, a scottoiler and JBX's air box flap mod.

No problems with the dealer and I am the third owner. I did not receive a letter from Yamaha. I phoned up and told the dealer about the recall and they checked and booked my bike in.

My bike had stalled a few times so I thought the TPS could be sus.

thanks, but mine is a little bit more modified than that, in the UK most dealers are not interested in anything....... erm.... different.

imho it's quite simple: yamaha sold you a bike with a faulty TPS. They admitted their mistake and have taken the correct measures to have them replaced. As long as you haven't messed about with the faulty TPS yourself, you are entitled to a new one. If your dealer makes a problem of it, find another one or contact Yamaha UK...

I think there would be no problem at all - You haven't modified the engine have you? (airflap / plugs etc excepted) - even if you have I still don't think it should be a problem. Let us know if it is and we'll organise a protest ride or something!
