I wondered about going from Portsmouth to Le-Harve and coming back, Cherbourg to Portsmouth, but single fairs are almost the same price as returns,

£44 + £104 = £148 pah!

So any thoughts? I like the idea of a shorter crossing, 8 hours on a bloody ferry is soooooo boring.......

But you go to sleep, so actually pretty sensible.

Not done it with two wheels, but used it not long ago for the 1st time with the cage and actually was pretty good.

You could always try the Brittany Ferries Seacat (Portsmouth - Cherbourg), only 3 hr crossing and around £108 for return on 18th/22nd Apr. (Oh, just seen this was on your original options list)

2. Pluses, Second cheapest, can have a kip, less road miles. Minuses, Longest crossing, have to leave on Wednesday.
3. Pluses, Second shortest crossing (3 hours), even less road miles, no need for cabin. Minuses, quite expensive (£108).
4. Pluses, by far the least road miles (only 335 miles), don't need a cabin. Minuses, Still 6 hours on the ferry, bit further on UK side (for me), most expensive (£120).
5. Pluses, short miles on road, short UK leg, no need for cabin. Minuses, 7 hour crossing, second most expensive (£118).

my vote would be for option 3, second choice option 2.
05:50 for option 1? Is that a real time? That'd mean a ride down Wednesday night and a Dover hotel, I'm past sleeping on park benches these days, so that cancels out the cheap crossing, that and the extra petrol involved. I've done 09:00 crossings to Calais or Dunkirk a few times, that's not so bad.

That's the tunnel crossing Dave, Ryan and I took when we went to Germany. Means leaving my house at 03:30.... we arrived in Germany at 21:00 ....... that was a very long day and 720 miles in total smile.gif

I'm thinking option 3 is good as it's only a three hour crossing good.gif plus much less miles than tunnel good.gif

If you're looking at cost, then LD Lines Newhaven to Dieppe is another option at £46 return. More distance at the other end to ride though.

Aha, another option, nice one!

So That would be,

Out Thursday 19th at 10:00, arrive 15:00fr, return Sunday 22nd at 18:00 arrive 21:00uk. Cost £48, 454 miles

OR

Out Wednesday 18th at 23:00, arrive 04:00fr, return Sunday 22nd at 18:00 arrive 21:00uk. Cost £46, 454 miles

So that's a 4 hour crossing.

In regard to the Ferry over. I'm planning on taking the Portsmouth - Le Havre on the overnighter.
Did it last year and it worked well for me. Had dinner with Saga, rode down, a couple of beers and then a good nights sleep.

The main thing is we arrive early morning and have the whole day to get down to Reminiac

Last year we stopped off at the Pegasus Bridge, I want to do another Historic site

engine changed july 2007 on a dyno run it made 79.1BHP / Torque 59.9Had a brief flirtation with a 1999 MKIIa but it blew an exaust valve on the M5 so was sold on to be repaired.

I can highly recommend the Orne valley to SW of Caen some great roads, sadly I wasn't SatNav enabled so I'm not sure of the precise details, but it could be a useful detour having maybe done faster roads from Le Havre, tracking south of Caen and away from E3 route.

Also found the one below recommended, pretty easy to string on after and then head West onto Fougeres and get back on the faster roads passing Rennes.
