1991 Tdm 850 Mk1 Project By Margus

Hy. First of all I'm sorry for some English grammar and vocabluary mistakes I make, English isn't my 1'st language.
I excanged my 1999 Cagiva Canyon 600 to a TDM 850 MK1 about a month ago and already have big plans with it.
Bike looked like this, when I bought it:



I've already taken the bike apart and work begins.

Things need to be done:
-Fork oil change and I'm also applaying protective rubber boots for the forks. -Done
-Repaint the bike to red or green (have'nt decided yet..).
-Sandblast and repaint the engine -Done
-Sandblast and repaint frame and swingarm. -Done
-Repaint rims. -Done
-Regrease ALL the bearings -Done
-Syncronise carburetors.
-Adjust valve clearances -Done
-Fit the engine with oil preassure switch.
-Repair my faulti RPM gauge.
-Fit handguards.
-Check carburetors -Done
-Check thermostat. -Done
-Mount a CLS 200µ chain lube system on my bike.
-Clean and check ALL the electrical connections.
-Make my side stand a bit better (longer and larger supporting plate for it). -Done
-Make a custon gear indicator.
-Make custom exhaust system out of Suzuki SV650 exhaust.

In the end my bike should look something like that:

Doin valve clearances? Use dappers valve shim exchange program and the job will be carroty - Free (other than you postin me yer shims) for sporting members.

Giving you an update already:

Right now my bike looks like this:


I'm gonna have a lot of job with this welded sprocket nut. I need to get it off, rethread the shaft and make a new nut with lathe (luckely I have a lathe in my garage)

Work on my bike hasn't ended jet!

loctite 638 will probably help from that happening again. Will be interesting to know how you get on saving that output shaft.

Check the metal just in front of the stand that the stand pushes against when it's down, this can wear and means the stand moves further forward and the bike leans over more. Mine had a fairly large groove in the metal, a bit of work with a welder and a grinder to build it back up would have a similar effect to lengthening the stand. The jaws at the top of the stand where it bolts to the frame can also open out a bit, causing a looser fit and again more lean angle, so clamping them up a bit more can improve things.

engine changed july 2007 on a dyno run it made 79.1BHP / Torque 59.9Had a brief flirtation with a 1999 MKIIa but it blew an exaust valve on the M5 so was sold on to be repaired.

Could somebody explain to me what Bigred, hammerite (is it a paint?) and crack in the frame mean in fhis forum. Some inside jokes?

Bigred is the Red 850 you pictured as your "end goal" - I THINK

Hammerite is paint, which I think Tony (original owner of Bigred) used to coat most of Bigred (with the expection of the panels).

Crack int he frame - not sure...

Someone will be along to give a potted history of Bigred shortly I would expect wink.gif

Yes, Big Red does have a potted history biggrin.gif but I know sweet fa about it, however..............

The mk1 has a fault that causes the frame to crack. Despite knowing this for years, very few have actually been discovered, until a few months ago when 2 appeared almost simultaneously rolleyes.gif

Hey-ho Margus, your list would be incomplete without bluespots.. these are newer and much improved front brake calipers.

I'm going to have the most awesome RPM gauge ever tongue.gif
On this screen I will be able to see my oil temberature


And a led will show me what gear I'm at (currently at 4'th gear)
