Have to say John that your new topbox and rack look much neater than the standard Givi setup I had. As regards weight, when we toured France each loaded box weighed 10kg (including the box) and we didn't have any trouble although we were only on good roads. As regards the seat we found the standard seat too hard. Motorcycle Seatworks asked our weights and installed softer foam. From memory I think I measured the new seat height as 840mm. Glad to see you are enjoying the bike - don't know whether I was wise to part with it!

Good to see you're still dropping in
Its horses for courses I think, if I was touring 2 up on the continent then the Givi monorack and side rack set up you were using would have been the only way to go. I hope to be touring/camping one up in the Scottish highlands and Islands for maybe 3-4 days at a time. A top box and tent bungeed to the rear seat will probably suffice, I have a couple of sets of Oxford lifetime soft panniers should I need more capacity.
What I have now is in reality less, but its neater so I'm happy with it
You got yourself another bike yet? You still after a B*W or maybe you'll go for a CBF? I know nothing about B*Ws but I test rode a CBF and was very impressed, it was just too like the CBR I currently own or I'd have bought one.
Spent a few hours cleaning the exhaust on the TDM this morning, its ridiculously shiny atm, I'll have to post some pictures up later

Have been too busy lately to go and do some test rides Don't know about a B*W I think buying one means instant expulsion from this excellent forum!!!! The TDM is ideal in so many ways. Don't know whether to go for a bigger heavier bike which would be more of a hassle for nipping into town and yet I do want to go touring 2up. There are virtually no bikes for sale privately at the moment and the dealers don't seem to have heard of the recession judging by their asking prices. BTW the tent we used touring France fitted into a tank bag and the map or car's sat nav fitted into the clear panel on top.

Won't get to compare both seat heights back to back until March/April time. I'd much rather keep what I have but if my brother continues to struggle then I'd rather do a swap than have him drop the bike! I'll post again then if I'm looking a swap.

Any idea whether the Givi E250 Monokey Universal Top Plate will fit directly to the 9'er standard top rack at all. I can see that the Monolock one does (thanks for the photos paddy900) but I was thinking of fitting the 52 litre top box and that looks like it's Monokey only.
I saw one at the local dealer and wasn't sure if everything would line up to the 2 front bolt holes.
Explanation I got from the local dealer is that the Monolock system is for smaller bikes and is not as robust, recommendation is always to go with the Monokey version where possible especially if you'll have a pillion leaning on it!
Other than that, it'd be the SW Motech Alu-Rack version but that's a chunk more expensive including the Givi Adapter

I've fitted the Universal Givi Plate. I used the original front bolts. They don't line up perfectly but they do fit. I found that after tightening the front bolts there was a small gap at the rear of the original rack. The W clamps will flex the plate slightly to take that up. I'm planning to put a small shim on either side at the rear in the future to tidy up the fit.

Here's my mounting
Used the Top Bolts that secure the Grab Rails and then drilled 2 holes further back. It's nicer as you cannot see any fittings. Solid as a rock too.

Cats - unfortunately it appears that Givi do 2 universal plates, one is for the Monolock (like yours) and the other for the Monokey (like Soapy's). It appears that although a lot cheaper, the Monolock ones only go up to the 46 litre version (I think it's called a V46) so although it'd be good from cost (I am Yorkshire after all) - it's a little small to fit 2 helmets in.
Soapy, on yours, does that make the top box tilt up a bit, that is, if I was to do it the same way as you, do you think it'd be better to put the spacers on the front bolts and leave the back ones (on the W clips) directly bolted through?
It looks like the AluRack one have the spacers in the front

I have to fit my monokey topplate on my 900 as well. Seems to be very well possible to bolt it directly to the rail.
I do wonder though, that Alu Rack, it looks nice but simple and expensive One should be able to make it himself. Does anyone know what thickness the material is?
In the sheet metal shop at work we may have some thicker types of alu sheets lying around, might give it a try.

Hi GHL. Got home today and went for a run, the weather is unreal. I have sent you a couple of PM's but they are not showing as sent. The box has a slight nose down attitude, it follows the profile of the rack.
