Trevs loaner arrived today badgrock.gif , still reading and not even got to turn it on yet......but already I can see the problem I were worried about.

If I go to Google maps on me phone, and type in "Rue de Brehat, Morlaix" it finds the wode and I can see le "Alle de Coat Amour" heading south from the end of it. It heads a bloomin long way South/SSE....cous its an old railway lion.

If I go to mapsource and type in "Rue de Brehat, Morlaix" it does not find it....but since I have already googled it above I can locate it easy enough and it is named (even though it wasn't searchable). The "Alle de Coat Amour" is shown but only within the town of Morlaix after which it shows a dead end.

If it is even possible for those who are using these offlion phone apps that dont need an interweb connection to run the above test it would be greatly appreciated please and thank you.

Of course its entirely possible that this is (one day) user error but since my use is probably quite unusual I can see why this wouldn't be a problem for the majority and might not have a fixification.

If you're searching from the unit, you have to select the correct country. Probably the same from mapsource, but I can't remember.

Not from the unit Trev, just from MapSource ont PC. Mapsource can find Morlaix no probs and most of the Rues....but not that wan. Lovin the fact you can just clickify the bits ya want and bung em on an SD card. Log yer routes, not wait hours for map to load (me phone is pre android), Find out where the hell you have been, find yer way back, set goals/points of interest. Plan routes. So powerful.....just need maps that show all the wee little tracks, railways, canal paths etc and I am defo sold on the idea.

Right....just had a look on mine.

Try searching for Brehat in the road name AFTER entering the town of Morlaix. It finds it if you refine your search a little in that way. Again try searching for Coat Amour, rather than Alle de Coat Amour. It does find it.

The problem is almost certainly the mapset you're using - "City Select" is effectively satnav and doesn't have that level of detail for tracks. You'd need to chack on the Garmin website, but there is probably a mapset that will suit. That said, the unit will still be able to pinpoint your position with grid ref/Lat/Longitude references to use in conjunction with a map.

If you're searching from the unit, it goes...country, town, road in that order or it'll get confuzzled.

The maps you need (for the 60c) would be the TOPO maps, but they're stupid expensive to get a full set, so much so, it'd probably be cheaper to pay the online costs with Google maps! Not sure about the newser units. The Garmin site doesn't show the maps as screen shots, so I'd be inclined to find a local(ish) shop that sells them and have a gander first.

Another option already mentioned that might be worth a look is Viewranger, who also do euro OS type maps that you buy in sections for the regions you're visiting. I use the 1:50,000 OS maps on my phone and they work fine, but I've never tried them in Euroland.

Yeah just been looking at the price of mapages gulp. TOPO of France £260 squiddlers. Benelux cycle map £115 squiddlers.

Viewranger would involve a new phone, though that is still an option I spose.

Have you checked with your phone network if they do something like a pre-pay roaming deal, or looked at foreign sim cards if your phone can already do what you want?

Yes Chris. Just been doing that. I found a good thread on moneysavingsexpert with alot of the options. If you just want to call then you can get some great deals and my Network also does great deals....until you talk about data then it gets very expensive, especially as phone will be running all day every day for about a month. The cheapest way of doing it that way is buying a French SIM once over there but I cannot find the "unlimited data" one that someone claimed to be using. If I went with the phone the cheapest way would be to just buy an adanoid wan and use off lion maps. Temted to just carry a bundle of maps now. smile.gif

On the TDM I would just go but on the treader going 5miles the wrong way...and then knowing you have to turn around and go another 5 miles back can get a little tedious.

Dappers...don't know whether you're aware, but the OVI store version of the viewranger software (for symbian/nokia phones) doesn't require an unlock code to work and can use openstreetmap or opencyclemap maps offline once you've downloaded them. Might be worth a look at.

Ahaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa. http://opencyclemap.org/ kerblammoooo. badgrock.gif Even has the example I gave earlier and has given that super highway the name of "V7".

Now I have found someone selling a map that is very similar to this one on an SD card. The problem with SD card maps is that apparently it is then not possible to load the maps onto the PC to route plan. But I have also found a downloadable GPX file with a route I want to do......will this GPX file just load onto the GPS device and overlay the map? (blimey I am scaring me'self ear, almost loike when Moose went all Techy on us).

The loaner has been a great help Trev and I ain't bust it yet and it aint been eaten by a hoss. good.gif

Right, I think we're nearly there. Download a programme called ITN convertor. It will convert just about any map file to any other format. From memory, Garmin use two formats for their maps - .gpx and for the life of me, I can't think of the other one. I'm not near a pc at the moment, so I can't check for you. I've not tried it, but you should be able to load it via mapsource once it's saved in the correct format.

Wowsers, clever stuff. ITN mentions it is based on Google maps, Google maps and earth are supported file formats, so it would be possible to load google maps onto the GPS device, not that it matters mush now as them treader specific maps look IDEAL.

Downloading...now.

Other Garmin file type .GDP? .MPS for mapsource.
