ETrex don't come with half the stuff Trevs had. In the box: Unit, USB cable...thats it! Have bought, screenprotectors, 2GB Micro SD card, RAM mount (after reading very bad reviews about poo Garmin plastic strip/cable tie mount for £14!!!).
Have managed to get software on PC (Garmin BaseCamp), Setup directories and files on SD card so software is tricked into thinking its the actual GPS unit. Downloaded GB treader maps onto the SD card but when installing the SD Card into the GPS it don't find the maps!!?!?!? Progress will be slower now Carpe working.

Have also been out on treader track plotting so have to figure out how to save tracks and view on PC.
Your loaner should be in the post tomato Trev. Thank you very m,uch for the borrow, t'was a huge help.

I've not used basecamp, but I would think the unit will have something in the options menu to swap mapsets. As for saving tracks, that will be found in the setup menu to just toggle on/off and probably a separate icon for saved tracks.

Rally I tried looking at them vids but didnt find em particularly enlightening and on very slow interweb so gave up trying to load the vids and worked it out with some Google searches and the Wiki attached to the excellent openstreetmap website.
Have now got the UK Velo maps working

Next step is trying to create a route

Several things that were unexpected. My route planning though only over a short distance had 100's of route markers as it was on tiny tracks and thats how I planned it on the PC. Didn't realise the unit was gonna "BONG" "BONG" "BONG" "BONG" at every marker.

Is there an easy way to make these things forget a marker and carry on? On the road without the 57 page A4 manual I couldn't sort it...and then on return discovered the info isnt in there anyways. Have read suggestions on web about deleting the marker but no idea how to tell which one of the 100's it was.

I usually number the waypoints in a simple numerical order rather than perhaps place names. Personal preference really and finding what works best for you. It appears that you need to be very careful with the positioning of the waypoints if it's that sensitive to missing one. Maybe try keeping the waypints to a minimum and only place them just past junctions to force it to turn you in the right direction rather than think for itself. Sounds like you are on the right track (pun intended).

Yeah I found the option to turn the "BONG" into a "BING" and also off. It is quite useful to have it...just not every 10metres. User error there as I didn't realise when plotting the route that every time I built a new section it was going to mark them as points. Will have to have a look again at how I can zoom in so as to avoid wayward marker but select a big enough section ferret not to BONG every 5 seconds. The missed point I noticed was because I had zoomed out to avoid all of these points when plotting on PC and a glitch on the map made a 10M venture off the track into the hedge. I left it there when planning on PC as I was interested to see what the unit would do.
The freebie cycle maps are ace, cycled a canal section and it then took me down a railway cyclepath I have passed many times but didn't even know existed. Very very neat. The weakest link is defintely me here so alot more trial and no doubt error is required before the Tour De Treader.
Remembered whilst on route that I may have put your unit on the "Cycle" profile rather than car/van and forgot to set back Trev.

That's the trouble with a myriad of vias GPS likes you to hit every one or will try to take you back and abort the rest till you do.

Re-plotted my first trip with about 100 less BONG points so am gonna have a rerun at some point. Found an excellent GPS tutorial, written by a normal user for incompetents loike me'sen and it really really made sense. He has broken it down into sections, so you can master one stage before conffuzzlin the shebooniegons oot of yersen with the next. I can get less Bongpoints and an easier to plot route using waypoints rather that direct routing (what I have been doing) but routing using waypoints seems more suitable to road use than tracks and railways and tings.
