I think it took me about 3 or 4 hours doing it ony own, including taking photos of everything, but access is more fiddly on a 900 so expect a little longer, though extra hands speed things up a lot. It's not actually a difficult job, It's just that you need to dismantle so much to get at the cams.
However bear in mind you need the engine cold for this, which could be tricky on a fettle day, and if you find you need to swap some shims you'll have to put it all back together to get home, then strip it again to change the shims unless someone has the right sizes handy when you initially check them.

Could I suggest folks that doing valve clearances at a fettle day is probably not a good idea, unless its at your house and its your bike!
Like Chris says, its a relatively straight forward job, doesn't take too long if it all goes well...
but I can guarentee that the fickle Gods of the Mechanicum will ensure that something will generally bugger the job up, usually it'll be that we will be missing at least one shim you'll need !!
I have a selection of shims here, and can pretty much say Yam dealers will not have them in stock (well the ones 'local' to me anyway!) and the Dappersfantasticshimexchangeservice utilises Royal Snail Mail
I addition its a job to be done when the engine is stone cold, not cool, luke warm, but stone cold, so...
If you ridden > 40 minutes to get to a fettle I'd not touch you motor for 3-4 hours, jobs a couple hours at least, so your looking at 6-8 hours
Wayyy too long for a fettle day, we have serious cake eating, tea drinking, breeze shooting to squeeze in too ya know!

Now, if you know what shims you have fitted, know what the valve clearances are, then we can work out required shims before the day and the job is a bit more feasible!
Thinking of that last point, for those of you who get the clearances done at a stealer, ask them for a note of what shim size they fitted to which valve, means if you ever fancy having a go yourself it make the whole job ALOT easier
The spanner monkey should be making a note as they go anyway, so it's not like you asking for any special extra info that they have to go out of their way to get/sort.

Advice noted, this is defo a job to be done at your own place.
I read the post by Chris G, great work!!, it has given me the confidence to tackle this myself.
I will have ago at this in a few weeks. I need to get a decent set of feeler guages first!
One question can I assume clearances as the same for 850 and 900?
If I'm in the UK on the weekend of your fettle, doubtful at the moment, I'll pop down!

We did Charlie's valve clearances in 2 stages. First time we checked the clearances and logged the shim sizes, then worked out the required shims, ate cake and went home

Charlie then buys the shims and Endo went back to Charlie's to swap 'em over and re-check clearances.
Also did Ballkeepers and Blackpins in 2 stages, and both involved cake !

I'm interested in your fettle day, is it going to be the 1st april?
my name is Jasper, quite new to this forum, got a 1997 tdm850 which i bought about 18 months ago with 36000 on the clock, it has now done 45000. nothing specific needs to be done, but i'd like to replace the output oil seal, which i have already got a new one for, as it uses a fair bit of oil.
thanks
J

Planning on having a Fettle day like we did last year. Sometime in March and be good to see Old & New faces for a brew and Catchup. If it's anything like ChrisG's tinkering day last year no work will take place in a hurry...

Will do Bacon on the Barbi along with Barbi Chicken through the day and Hot drinks. I thought last years fettle went well.
Anyone up for this?
Post Code is RG40 4HT for those who don't know me
