The "via points" that are created when direct routing are not renameable for some reason!!! But I found this program: http://www.sackman.info/ to convert them all to "waypoints" which are renameable. This should mean the best of both worlds. You can create a route with "direct route" but then rename the points....very handy for offroad/tracks/canals etc.

And also for treaders this site: http://bikeroutetoaster.com/ which allows you to create/view/save/download/upload a route and view in all of the google type sat/map/earth etc much easier than in Mapsource. If you select the mode of transport it actually then selects the best route for that transport, whereas Mapsource doesn't for the treader even though it asks for travel type. Am concerned that if I create a route from one map (ie toaster) but then download the route to the GPS (using the free cycle maps) that it might not be the same and its gonna get upset at EVERY BONG point!!! : blink.gif : Guess I can test this easily enough with a few trials (and errors). Would love to have the toaster cycle maps but cannae find em...yet.

Has evolved alot since the first Tour De Treader. And alot of alterations goin on for the next tour. Not done too bad as its about the same age as me mkI.

Seat is called a "crossbow" and feels loike ya have been shot up the rissole with wan until ya git used twit. Now bought a Brooks B17...designed in 1898! and still the preferred saddle for long distance tourers. They take a while to bed in though....about 600 miles apparently. http://www.brookseng...g/B17 Standard/

And on to GPS. Have now sorted out the missing "via points" problem. The unit needs to be in "Active Route" mode and has 3 "Off Road Transition" options and only 2 deal with missed points, 1) AUTO: Moves to next only after target via point hit. 2) Distance: Moves to next only after you are within a specialfried distance of the target via point and 3) Manual: It flags the current via point and you manually select the next target. So Auto gets annoyed (hence the BONG strike) if you miss a point. Distance would have worked for any hedge excursions but Manual will likely be my preferred method of point selection. None of this info was very clear in the manuel but ADVRider came to the rescue again.

That said, have ya got it sussed now then ?

Also wondering how you'd go about planning your route when abroad ? Do ya have to plan it all before you set off from home, or can you plan en routeetootee ?

Just received a Garmin Dakota 20 and am now following the same confusing path of which maps to use, this thread's been load of help. I was using Viewranger but battery life on a phone was too short for use on a mountain bike without multiple battery swaps. I did find a way to output gpx routes from the French OS site (I'll see if I can find it) and used http://wtp2.appspot....eresthepath.htm for UK route planning.

Hmmm... Can't find it now but I'm sure it was direct through the IGN site. Seem to remember it being difficult to find last time. Had a great ride around Calais using some really good paths and hardly any road work. I'll have a look tomorrow to see if I still have the gpx file.

Looks well modified and fit for purpose. Would be interested in a thread about the ongoing alterations.

A trays beans. Thanks for that. I am happy routing in Mapsource/basemap. The biketoaster site is ace but is very temperamental on my PC. One thing I have been wondering is if you use one of these sites that allows GPX export....what happens if the routes are a bad match to you GPS map?

Getting there with this GPS thing but am having a problem that I cannot seem to solve.

If I plan a route on Mapsource or Basecamp it highlights the route and glues the route to the road...or in my case cycleway/track or whatever - ACE. The problem I am having is when this is transferred to the GPS it seems to say "thats a lovely route, which I am now going to ignore and reroute as I see fit"....this is bloody annoying. The three options that I have are onroad "calculate for time" or "calculate for distance" and offroad. The onroads are changing the bloody route I spent hours plotting to one that I don't want and the offroad just draws straight lines atwix waypoints ignoring the roads/tracks/paths. I wish there was a 4th option "leave my bloody well planned route alone and follow it exactly as I set it!!!!!!".

Anyone know how to do this?

Which gps are you using in the options for most garmins you can tell it not to autoroute then it will follow what you have uploaded, the only problem with this if you make a wrong turning you will have to retrace until you are back on the route.

That would be wonderful if that is possible. Unit is an E-Trex 20. No mention of Autoroute in the manual...but that certainly don't mean snot there. Cannae find it though.

Haaa just came from that page...clicked your link and ended up back there. Can't see how to turn off autoroute there either? Just the options I mentioned above. Gulp, this is not good.
