At work we've started selling LED lights (for house interior). This 'spotlight' is one of them:

With the narrow beam version, 5 degree spread, the maker says the range is 60m, but probably not at the intensity of a regular headlight. They run off 12VDC but need a constant current driver for 350ma.

I thought of mounting 2 of these under the front cowling, and hidden by the side covers like this:

The idea is to get better riding light when dark, but mainly to be seen by other motorists. I think it's far easier for someone to judge my speed hurling at them with 2 reference points instead of just one.

Good idea? Terrible? Looks horrible?

Discuss.

They look like just the right size physically and the mounting bracket looks like it is very flexible to allow you set the angle etc...Any idea of the wattage? Are they are available in white light? How much do they cost?
They are very interesting indeed....

Have you ever lent someone 20 quid and never seen it again? It was probably worth it.

I did the trig' for this and got a beam spread of 5.2m at 60m... that's pretty narrow. Might be good for spotting echidnas or hedgehogs though.

Can you get a DC-DC constant current driver that's suitable for automotive installation?

Do you have a link to the mfgrs spec' sheet?

Waking up this thread again. These are now available with current reduction built in, so they can be supplied directly from 12V.

I' m getting Black ones (aluminium finish is also available), 2,5W, Cool white 6000k, 190LM. The catalog says 40deg angle, but i can get lenses for 15 and 7 degrees too.

The manufacturer is KLEMKO. If anyone has trouble buying them give me a shout and i might be able to help. You need to download their catalog to get the full specs. The online product page just has a picture and partnumbers.

Note that these are for indoor use and NOT waterproof. I'm planning on doing that bit myself.

As Azza said above, if you want to be seen by others go for the wider beam pattern

Suddenly spring is here, and I just remembered all the stuff i was going to do during winter.
....like install extra lights.

Oh-well bike is on the road, so I might as well do som research before i drag it back into the garage to dismantle.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to where to hook up the extra lights?
- separate switch
- with the headlight
- both

Does anyone have a suggestion on wich wire to tap into for any of the above? I'd like the power to be switched off with the ignition key.

While I'm at it I'm also going to install relays for headlight, and for heated grips, and possibly also for a power outlet (might share relay with the heated grips).
Can anyone recommend a good howto for this? Like the above, any suggestions to what wires to tap into, and also suggestion for relays would be helpful.

On a 900 there's a big white connector block where the main loom connects to the nosecone loom just in behind the left hand faring pannel. I've tapped in there to both the dipped and main beam circuits. Those wires go through an on-off-on switch to the signal feed on the relay, meaning I can have the lights turned off, or set to come on with dipped or main beam. Personally I like to have the ability to at least turn off spot lights to ensuer they're not a problem for MoT. I used a standard automotive 4 port relay, they're only a few quid from a motorfactors. I can find something I wrote on which pins to connect to what if you need it (someone drew a good diagram too, might have been Cleticbiker)

Courtesy of the previous owner, my 9er has two 55watt spots with one either side, mounted off the front lower engine mount.
There are two bolts that screw in upwards vertically holding the round mount dampener bush.
use extended bolts (std is 30mm long to the flanged hex end) to allow for the plate mount for the spots.
They are wired in with an on off switch allached to the left hand clutch/mirror perch and only power up when the engine is on along with the oem headlight.
So you get full left/right spread and 4 x 55w on high beam.
i think this link will take you to a picture.
http://www.trx850.co...d...6&mode=view
The spots are $30 units with a $15 wiring kit from an auto parts mob here in Oz called Supercheap Autos.
cheers

p.s. the 5W LED T10 replacement for the running light is quite bright too !

wiring is from the parking light via a separate switch, just in case someone says i can't use them together with headlight.

I'd put a couple of cree mini spotlights under mine. Ebay specials and really bright - I had to angle them down slightly to avoid dazzling cars, but one has failed already, so mine was not such a good idea maybe........

These has quite a narrow beam, so they are easy to point in the right direction without annoying other motorists. I got these for free so it's not a big loss if they fail. Next will be to swap the running light for a while LED bulb replacement thingy.
