so I will degrease it in work using industrial water based degreasing agent just for interest http://shop.trimite.com/t-cleaner-70
then sand blast the rocker cover to remove the old paint and return the unit to bare metal ready for prep.
then its paint away, the lad works with me, so his choice of finish and design. As he works for me in the spray & print shop he can help me on this one.
this is the original Rocker cover, the piccy does not show how bad the paint job is, the paint is flaking off the sides, and is rough in places.

now blasted, only to show a very pockmarked surface, ah well

etch primer and 1st coat added

1st layer done

here it is fitted to the lads car, we are selling the rocker cover on ebay at the moment as he is thinking of selling the Saxo, this was always an option to sell rocker cover in the future.

I've got side panels and a nose cone all primed, and sanded ready to be painted, Have a cheapo compressor and gravity fed spray gun but have no idea what paint to use or where to get it from.
I'm not expecting amazing results with it being first use, but wanna make sure I'm doing it right

Could you point me in the right direction and if anyone knows of any shops in Manchester

When I did my bros side panels I went to my local automotive paint supplier, had a good chat with them, told them what i was spraying up, they advised me on paint and 'crystal' clear coat. lucky enough I can use the works spray booth, during my own time (lunch time).
I would suggest that you practice first on something not important first, just to find you rhythm.
once fully dry I use G3 finishing compound.
