I've done a search on the forum and read up on what's been said about top box's and I just wanted to clarify that I need to take off my grab rail and put a different bracket on before attaching the base-plate for the top box? i.e. the base plate is not attached to the standard grab-rail? Can anyone advise me where to get one from and the approx price?

Excuse my ignorance, I've always been a top-box snob and never had one, but with summer approaching (hopefully) and trips away beckoning I think it is a definate must.

Any advice about cheapish brands and sizes would be appreciated as well.........

think you need this Luggage rack.
It bolts to the existing grab rail. It cost me around £75.

Ohh no you don't tongue.gif

there is a way to fit givi plastic plates that come with the cheaper boxes, i know i did it tongue.gif you leave the standard yamaha grab rail in place and buy a one of these off this guy http://cgi.ebay.co.u...1QQcmdZViewItem

it comes with a universal plate which can be easily fitted to the existing grab rail with the plates provided. I put some throw over luggage anti slip matting doubled several times over the grab rail to protect it then fitted the plate on the top.

i regularily carry approx 15 kilos of camera gear in the box and its never moved 1 iota in all that time.

when the weather gets better i will snap off some digi shots of how i fixed the plates underneath the grabrail so it cannot slide back forward or sideways.

it's a really cheap way of getting some capacity the 450 box can easily hold 2 full face lids its 45 litres after all

I think for the amount of time I am looking at using the top-box, really for trips away, the cheaper option that attaches to the grab rail looks best. If I was going to use it all the time I would probably go for the more expensive luggage rack + a box.

The seller on ebay has a shop so is unlikely to sell out of box's, I would like to see a picture of what yours looks like amarko5 before I buy one.

If you did want a luggage rack and topbox mount, what about this?

Yamaha only recommend 5kgs for that kind of rack - in fact I think Givi say the same for their full rack - enough for a sandwich methinks.
My Givi rack broke on hols this year but I did have about 12/15 kg in the box

The plates mentoined above are for Givi MONOLOCK only. Generally they are the smaller Givi cases, although they might be big enough for you. Be aware that if you'd like a bigger case, you need a MONOKEY plate to go with the MONOKEY boxes.

Nice pics and nice exhaust system. Maybe this is something for my own TDM - let's call her Marianne (I'm an old Marianne Faithfull fan...) - and I was wondering what make it is, those on the photos? Is it Akrapovich? No, it's not... Akrapovich don't make them that short, do they...?

Thanks for the info on the top box's, I'm gonna go for the one that the guy sells on ebay and bolts onto the existing grab rail............I will have a punt at the rack and plate on ebay just in case they go for a song, you never know!

Popped a piccy of my bike on as its got twin Akrapoviks on for AJ_Blizzard to have a look at, they are a tad longer than amorko5's. I have to agree with TDMTAM, the quality of the pictured TDM's is a credit to their owners and the black is a bit sexy, in an ungay way!!!??

(The pic's a bit dark I'm afraid.....)

I have a centerstand on mine. Can I keep it or do I have to remove it if I replace the stock exhaust with the cool looking (and groovy sounding...?) Acrap. cans?

I had a Kappa top plate spare and drilled the existing TDM rack to match the holes ( don't put it too far forward or you can't raise the seat with the box on. Maybe obvious to some, but, hey, I did it!) and I made some angled spacers to go on the bolts from a bit of ally tube purchased from B&Q. Used it (fairly light admittedly as I have panniers too) for the last 4,500 miles with no probs at all.

I can't decide if I prefer the engine bars or the bellypan on the previous posts. Hmm - decisions eh? smile.gif
