- how hard (or impossible) is it to get fuel on a Sunday (or bank holiday)?
- is the 17th of May 2007 a bank holiday in the UK?
- are there many places (hotels, service stations, ...) that accept Maestro and/or Visa?

Ooooo if your doing Hard Knott Pass make sure the weather is good, we did it 2 years ago in thick mist and 2 riders lost the road. If your going to West Scotland the Pass of the Cattle to Applecross is one of the finest mountain roads in GB. Why not take in a Bike Rally whilst your here? There are lots of smaller ones on that time of year.

Agree with what others are saying about the south of england though, there IS toooo much traffic.
My missus says a MUST DO in Scotland is the Culloden Battle site its very eirie....

Mastercard is pretty well universal (not sure about Maestro), but carry cash for privately-owned B&B places and some for fuel in more remote areas. There are banks and cash machines in places like Oban, Fort William, Inverness and so on. but not in Kinlochewe, Applecross etc.

Hi and welcome. Not a bad plan at all, and it's good to see you're aiming all the way up to the north. You've clearly made some decisions on the various options, and will end up with a good mixture of experiences. As discussed earlier, it may be better to take the A697 across the border, rather than the A68, as far as Coldsteam, then come across from there (various options) to pick up your route.

The mist can't be much worse than the weather we had on the Ballons d'Alsace last year. At a certain point we stopped at a junction when the first rider asked if we wanted to have a coffee at the inn. Confusion all around as no-one knew what he was talking about. Turned out that there was an inn just at the other side of the junction

Culloden is certainly a haunting place, especially when you see how closely the two armies faced each other, and consider the bleak conditions on the day when 1500 died in only about an hour. It's also a testament to an idiotic leadership - still a very topical theme. Worth a pause for thought.

One afterthought, Kirikoe - you've planned a very extensive coverage of Skye, but appear to have missed out the B8083 to Elgol, which is one of the favourites and will give you a classic view of the highest mountains (The Black Cuillin) from Elgol. Depends on weather and traffic conditions, of course, and the road will require a bit of care, but you will find it is worth it, perhaps in exchange for one of the northern branches? I'd suggest missing out the middle branch to Trumpan. What do others think? The Skye "programme" is quite a chunk of riding, especially re. light duration at that time of year?

For anyone not familiar with the West Highlands of Scotland, I've attached a couple of wee pictures:
1) Shieldaig by Loch Torridon, approaching from Applecross. The tree is Scotland's answer to the Monterey Pine in the US (well, not quite - it's yet to become a registered trade mark)

2) Plockton, with the Red Cuillin mountains of Skye across the water.

~~spyball alarm/immob,~~ bluespot brake calipers and Stainless hoses, Fournales air adjustable shock with Remote Resevoir, forks raised 10mm thru yokes, racetech linear fork springs in 15 wt oil, Kappa wingrack/luggage, heated grips, Kedo handguards, dual heat controller to power heated jacket liner and or pants!!, Stebel 136DB horn, K&N air filter, colour matched Baglux tank cover (magnetic tank bag modified to fit cover), osram +50% headloight bulbs, headlight protector,"~~NitramSpecial" parking loight, tail light~~ indicators all running on LED's & incorporate "Lite Buddies", MK7 Scottoiler fitted, taller screen, 2-2 stainless steel CCC's, Devil stainless down pipes. MKI Renntec engine crash bars & sump guard.
engine changed july 2007 on a dyno run it made 79.1BHP / Torque 59.9Had a brief flirtation with a 1999 MKIIa but it blew an exaust valve on the M5 so was sold on to be repaired.
