One afterthought, Kirikoe - you've planned a very extensive coverage of Skye, but appear to have missed out the B8083 to Elgol, which is one of the favourites and will give you a classic view of the highest mountains (The Black Cuillin) from Elgol. Depends on weather and traffic conditions, of course, and the road will require a bit of care, but you will find it is worth it, perhaps in exchange for one of the northern branches? I'd suggest missing out the middle branch to Trumpan. What do others think? The Skye "programme" is quite a chunk of riding, especially re. light duration at that time of year?

Thanks for the tip . Any ideas for bed and breakfast ( twin room or 2 singels )

Just ride into town and look for the "vacancies" sign hanging outside the b & b's. Virtually every house north of glasgow is a b & b so you shouldnt have any trouble finding one good.gif

Agreed - you're travelling at a relatively quiet time. Don't leave it too late in the day, though, in remoter areas, and beware of Sundays, especially on Skye which is still protective of a quiet Sabbath: even travelling around used to be frowned upon and the bridge was bad news.

some more questions. I'm looking at the Top 10 of Britain's best biking roads and I was wondering about the n°1. "The A82 by Glen Coe", are they referring to the A82 from Clifton to Glen Coe or the section from Glen Coe to Fort William, or perhaps, both?

As a single road, ie by number, I guess it means the whole thing from Balloch (Loch Lomond south end) to Inverness, with perhaps a focus on the section from Crianlarich to Fort William? Across Rannoch and into Glen Coe is fast and sweeping with wildish scenery at the same time. Don't know otherwise what's meant by "#1". Any still resident Scots care to give a more expert view?

PS Clifton? The only one I know is a bit far south - like, Bristol.

well "No.1" is a wickedly fast (if ya fancy that sort of thang!) and very scenic, even in driving sleet/rain i still enjoy spanking No.7 along it. i lashed along it at a fair ole lick (easy there BB) from the Green Welly to Applecross in sept. thru severe wind and rain, felt gr8 despite being soaked right to the bone (again, easy there BB gurly).

spyball alarm/immob, bluespot brake calipers and Stainless hoses, Fournales air adjustable shock with Remote Resevoir, forks raised 10mm thru yokes, racetech linear fork springs in 15 wt oil, Kappa wingrack/luggage, heated grips, Kedo handguards, dual heat controller to power heated jacket liner and or pants!!, Stebel 136DB horn, K&N air filter, colour matched Baglux tank cover (magnetic tank bag modified to fit cover), osram +50% headloight bulbs, headlight protector,"NitramSpecial" parking loight, tail light indicators all running on LED's & incorporate "Lite Buddies", MK7 Scottoiler fitted, taller screen, 2-2 stainless steel CCC's, Devil stainless down pipes. MKI Renntec engine crash bars & sump guard.
engine changed july 2007 on a dyno run it made 79.1BHP / Torque 59.9Had a brief flirtation with a 1999 MKIIa but it blew an exaust valve on the M5 so was sold on to be repaired.

We will definitely take on n°7 as well yahoo.gif
I'm not a particular fan of the very fast sweeping roads, I prefer the more technical challenges. But it might be nice for variety and if it's anything like the N10 along the Our towards Vianden (Luxembourg), I'm sure we'll enjoy it!

Tyndrum IS a small hamlet, with nothing but acres of b****r-all next to it, so it must be Mrs Clifton's house?

(Later)
Mapsource is getting out of hand - it'll be listing phone boxes soon. I've found Clifton on the 1:50,000 map, on the "outskirts" of Tyndrum - probably the red light district smile.gif Not likely to ring any bells if you ask the way to it from any further than 10 km.

For those who need further detail, this means hurling yourself blindly into a combination of howling gale and water cannon with added ice cubes, while passing one truck (or are there more in front?) and hoping nothing is coming the other way. It's a peculiarity of Glencoe itself (aka the wind tunnel), particularly when southbound.

We'll still be coming down from Fort William, doing a tour around Loch Leven and then take the A828 along the coast. Followed by the A816 all the way down to the southern tip of loch Awe and back up again to its northern shore. A then we'll do the A85-A82-A828 tour again especially for the missus wink.gif

Forget the tour round Loch Leven - take the Ballachulish bridge. You'll still get the best view and avoid the crap (aluminium works etc.)

Hi DK, sounds like an ace trip, look me up in Edinburgh when you're there.
One further suggestion - when coming down from Mallaig, don't go all the way the Fort William - its not very nice and the road is dull - instead turn right at Lochailort and take the road south past Glen Uig (great wee hotel) and very scenic, mainly single track roads (Castle Tioram worth the short detour) via Strontian then a fab road to the Corran Ferry (boat goes every 30 mins, about £3 for a bike) and rejoin the main road south of Fort William. Fingers crossed for the weather!
