So here is my modified Garmin base - designed to be more rugged than the last! blush.gif

This 'ere is what happened to the original base (which was mounted in much the same way as I show below - see the note about 90 degree reorientation)

MY REBUILT VERSION GOES LIKE THIS:

1. Take the standard Garmin base:

and deconstruct so you are left with the bits...

use the base (yours shouldn't be broken like mine!!) as a template. Use 3mm aluminium and make a new base plate. ie cut the oval, and drill four holes, countersink. This will leave you with a base similar to the plastic original one.

I also added two holes in the centre to match the clamp bracket I'm adapting (see photos lower down). these need to be countersunk (you can see these), but on the opposite side to the four countersunk holes I made first.

The other two holes just happened to be in the scrap I was using, but thought I would leave them open to aid drainage in case of rain (well...that sounds feasible eh?). the other blind countersink, is to locate the spring (from the release catch)

Before reconstructing the Garmin bit, I had to mount it onto the bracket... I've also added a flat packing piece between the aluminium and the clamp - these are the bits to be put together...

The bracket is from Halfords - it was a cycle lock holder that fits on a bike down tube (about £7.99 including the lock)

...and here's one I made earlier

Screw the remaining garmin bits on to the above assembly, and mount onto handle bars (I had to use a bit of extra packing to get it tight on the bars.

and here's the GPS in situ..

The only change I've made from the original one I made (using the plastic Garmin base) is to reorientate it 90 degrees, so the GPS unit now slides in from the side, rather than from the back (as before). I found the original way made it a trifle awkward getting the key in and out of the ignition.

One other note: normally (in a car) you would have the lock lever facing you - I've put it a the back (towards the instruments), as I thought this would allow drainage at the lowest point, rather than ingress at the highest point!!

I hope this is of use to someone else!

Okay I'll have to consider that. Time being the limiting factor. I'm away for a couple of days, and will mull it over - I would also want to be able to source bits too.

I have made one additional change to "improve"/bodge it

I found that the spring is not strong enough, so I took that right out and instead wedge a rubber grommet under the push down button - that works surprisingly well (no problems and easy to use).

the grommet is the type you get to fit around domestic electrical wall socket/light switch metal boxes (the bit in the wall you don't see).

URGENT HELP NEEDED!!!!

I desperately want to up load a route onto my streetpilot III . I've done this before all find and dandy. The harddrive has been changed on the computer, I've reinstalled software, been tot the Garmin Site and uploaded the latest, and opened it.

SAt NAv is plugged into COM1 Port (and yes it is all connected properly)

Sat Nav turned on. Interface onto "Garmin" like wot the instructions say.

Map Source is telling me it can't find the device. Aggghhhhh. rebooting doesn't work either.

Any ideas what to try next?

I don't remember how the Garmin software works but can you select other serial ports?

Try COM3 which is basically the same as COM1.

Depending on how many ports you have on your PC also try COM2 or COM4 just in case. PCs used to have two physical serial ports which can be assigned COM1 and COM2 respectively and can also be assigned virtual ports COM3 and COM4.

Good luck. (Sorry if this is b*ll*cks) blink.gif

If you hold the Alt key down and double click on the MyComputer icon on your desktop it should bring up System Properties dialog box.

Click the Hardware tab and then Device Manager button.

A new dialog box pops up. Expand the Ports (COM & LPT) folder and double click on Communications port (COM1).

Under the General tab it should read "This device is working properly".

Click the PortSettings tab which should read: 9600 baud, 8 Data bits, Parity 0, Stop bits 1 and Flow Control 0.

Again sorry if this all old hat. I looked again at my Garmin Mapsource CitySelect software and it doesn't give you the option of choosing a different COM port - I was getting mixed up with Memory Map which does.

You could try this forum: http://www.pocketgps...php?name=Forums
They have a Garmin GPS Hardware forum. you have to register to post

good luck

Great bunch eh!
