Just (5-600 miles ago) had the bike services by a Yamaha dealer (Doug Dearden's, Holbury for anyone knowing the South Hants area). One of the things I asked him to make sure was done was ahead bearing check because I worried I had over/under-tightened them when I did it myself. Now on firm braking, if the front wheel hits a bump there's a solid clunk from the front end. I'm off for a week to mid-France next Friday so really have only this weekend to fix anything that's amiss.

Head bearings again or could it be something more insidious like some sort of bush within the forks themselves?

Also, and unrelated. I've only got a std. Mk7 scottoiler fitted. If I fill it up before leaving, is it likely to last a full week's nbike touring holiday or should I be looking to take extra to top it up? I might have the time to buy a lube-tube but I've overcooked the holiday costs so money's too tight.
Another boring night & I'm feeling pissed....

the easiest way to check: if you have a centre stand use it and put some weight on the rear so the front wheel comes of the ground. Stand in front, grab the top section of the fork and wiggle it. If there is play it is most likely the bearings.
If there is no play repeat with the bottom section of the fork, if there is play it is most likely the fork.

if you don't have a centre stand find something else to get the front wheel of the ground.

I'll let go of my throttle when they pry it from my cold, dead hands...

a standard mk7 scotty will give you approx 500miles if set up for correct drip rate etc
a lube tube will increase the range to approx 2000miles
obviously wet weather will mean increased oil use

Unfortunately I like it wet & dripping. Made a Divvy 600 chain last 30k miles that way - and I'm not easy on the transmission, either.

I have the same problem. WHen i brake hard (on spot )not moving i hear a clunk and when i release back up, also.

I sit on the bike, press front brake and rock the bike front down an up. if i rock it to the limit, i hear clunk/clunk. It really concerns me, because the steering is really important, and i wouldn't like it to get stuck.

I have a picture of my steering and i am wondering if the gap i pointed out isn't to big but don't know how to post it in the reply.

The picture is here: http://www.email.si/...p.php?id=261655

Can anyone look on theirs and tell me if this is ok ?

Just thought I'd point out this is an old thread recently rejuvenated.

I have also had the same thought as Wicky, because I'd had a Yambrahahahahaha mechanic tighten up the head. Twice. And it still occasionally clunks as I meet sleeping policemen (lazy bastard pigs!) or pot-holes.

I'm still vaguely concerned that the inner bushes are going/gone. At 24k miles. Not that impressive, if you ask me.

Mine has 7000 km on the clock, so its even less impressive. Have an impresion, that the previous user has kissed something with the front.

What head did he tighten up ? Did anyone look at the picture and notice something odd ? I have a suspicion that the gap on the head is too big.

This is the link to the picture (can't paste paste the picture in here):

I hope you can see it. Can anyone check their bike if the gap is the same ?

My 99er does it too. I seem to remember another thread some time ago, where somebody suggested tapping some nuts somewhere. I never did get round to doing it and now can't find the thread..... rolleyes.gif

It's good to know it's not just mine though as I originally thought the worst and imagined having to change the head bearings. I bought her with only 3k8 miles on and she did it then so I thought that maybe the previous owner had done a load of stoppies/wheelies etc.. unsure.gif

I guess you just call it character. blink.gif
