Wanted to go on a small pre-dinner tour today, but after I rolled the 900 out of the garage and wanted to start it the only thing that happened was a loud rattle from the box under the saddle where the lead from the start button/ignition is plugged in.
The LCD display didn't show any error codes and the clock didn't reset (at least not at first).

After a check of the fuses and a few tries to start the bike the battery started to give up, the LCD screen went blank and the clock reseted...

Anyone got an idea what the problem might be? Can it be caused by only the battery not being able to provide enough current?

In any case, I need to recharge the battery now and since I don't have any electricity in the garage I need to remove it. The Yamaha service manual says I should be able to just lift out the battery, but I can't seem to get it out from under the part of the frame that the tank rests on. Is there a special trick to it?

thanks in advance.

Carefully lever it out from the back of the plastic tray with a blunt screwdriver....it's tight...lift the rear and it pops out easy peasy smile.gif

yieha!
Baby is purring like a kitten again. And I found the culprit: the Starcom intercom normally switches itself of when you unplug the rider's head set, but apparently something broke. The thing just kept draining the battery and after 5 days the battery didn't have enough juice anymore to start the bike.

So I went back to the shop where I bought the Starcom about a year ago and the guy contacted Starcom. They didn't hear about any similar problems before, but were interested in checking it out. So I got a new intercom for free and they got my old one as study material yahoo.gif

anyway, kudos to the starcom crew wub.gif
excellent service.

That will be your starter solenoid. They all do that, Sir, when your battery is flat.

If you tie a strip of cotton rag or string around the battery when you refit it (loose enough to get a finger under) it makes it a helluva lot easier to get it out next time. wink.gif
