Well, it certainly is more adventurous with this weather. Curious to hear your experience (and see the pics of course). Which MRA do you mean? The variotouring screen with the adjustable flip (which I have) is better I think if you are over 1.90m. If you are shorter the turbulent boundary layer will be too high and aimed at your helmet. The MRA double bubble seems higher and steeper than the secdem, so either good for veeeery short people or really tall folks, I think.

If you like we can meet up once, swap bikes and directly compare the Secdem with the MRA variotouring? I'm usually in the neighborhood of either Almere or Schiphol airport.

Currently I have the MRA Vario mounted on the bike. But I recognize the experience of AJ, so I was looking for an alternative. Which I hope to find in the Secdem screen. In my previous post I meant the new MRA DB screen, with the 'unusual' bubble/wedge.

My experience with the MRA Vario:
In top position at low speeds it works good.
In top position at high (legal) speeds there is much turbulence

In lowest postion at low and high speeds there is (much) pressure on the upper body. However with a fairly steady flow. But for my height at high speeds is not for long runs.

Now the flip is in middle position and it gives me in almost all situation more or less turbulence. But sound levels are the highest in this position.

So that's why I give the Secdem a shot. As soon as the screen arrives I will give an update!

Sure we can meet. Not very surprised about the locations blink.gif

Montpelier is where it is? Nice town, had a charter a few years back with the F50. Takes about 2 hours 45 then, flew over the French Alps, amazing that was:

The only answer I can give you:
Non of the screens is a solution for everybody. It is a matter of personal taste, body and wishes.

Read the thread and make up your own mind on which way to go!

It looks good, doesn't it? Hope it fits 100 % to the fairing - or at least 98-99 % as mine does. The build quality is not as good as MRA, but good enough IMO...

Went back to the original screen today and went for a run. Found that I got a bit more buffeting about the head and shoulders, the noise level is about the same but am not getting the double vision thing I was getting above 70 with the Givi screen. smile.gif smile.gif Will probably stay with the original but wife will probably have something to say as she has noticed a lot less buffeting on the back with the taller screen. huh.gif huh.gif

My girlfriend also got a bit more turbulence with the MRA in high position which makes sense. Usually shorter is better, still looking forward to Vincent's Secdem screen which seems to be one of the few screens which doesn't seem to follow that rule.

It looks good, and you're right it is not a perfect fit as with the MRA.

I'm not sure if this screen gives me what I want, but there are differences:
- I got more pressure on the shoulders, however front pressure on the helmet is considerably less.
- Noise is not noticably lower or different. Maybe a bit less pounding...
- Turbulence seems a little bit less.

This was at 130km/u, crosswind (5bft)

EDIT:
On the way back of the (hard) workday: I had a lot of head-wind. Because of increase of the shoulder pressure it was not a stable ride, somehow. Now I also noticed that noice is louder than with the MRA Vario. I also noticed that much of the noice comes from the wind pounding on the shoulders. (Pounding is not that hard that you cannot move your arms, but it is harder than with the MRA again)

When doing 80 km/u there is considerably more wind on the helmet than with the MRA. Allthough the wind flow then is more stable.

If you ask me now: I should go back to the MRA Vario. Maybe my height is not suited for the SECDEM.

As other noticed this screen is smaller at the top and that could explain the pressure on the shoulders. And I'm not sure whether this is windflow from the arms. Could handguards solve this? (Maybe different topic)

This is my first impression after a 80km commuter ride.

Vincent
Remember: I'm 1.95m, and fairly big.

Have now had a chance to take the MRA Double Bubble out for a longer/faster spin (see earlier posts in this thread), and I'm sticking with it.

Seems like the best compromise of all that I've tried:
OEM Screen: less protection than I'd like, fairly smooth airflow mellow.gif
Yamaha Touring Screen: Good protection, but TURBULENCE!!! ranting.gif
MRA Vario: Extremely variable dependant on speed/position of aerofoil. Really annoying whistles at mid-speeds. notfunny.gif
MRA Double Bubble: Better protection (not as much as I'd like, but far better than OEM). Fair amount of air pressure on helmet/shoulders, but airflow still fairly smooth. good.gif

As so many others have said, I don't think there is a 'correct' screen for the TDM 900. It's always going to be dependant on size, riding position etc.

I'm 6'3" (1.90 metres), my bike has GS handguards, and handlebar risers (about 3/4" from memory) - and I'm finally happy that I have found the right setup (for me!!). yahoo.gif yahoo.gif yahoo.gif

I totally agree with the correct screen... And a TDM was not completely built for complete wind-less rides...
How did raising the bar and handguards help you?

Because I think that the wind travalling from the bars via the arms to the shoulder play a significant role in this.

For my situation was/is the SECDEM not right choice, so I want to try to return and/or exchange the screen.

Thanks for sharing the experiment, Vincent. Concering handguards, they would have to be huuuge (tall, high) to enable your upper arms / shoulders getting less windblast. I had GS handguards on my GS (duh), they make a huge difference in keeping your hands warm in very cold weather. But no role at all in keeping your upper arms from being stretched.

The shoulder feeling you described is why I went from stock low screen to MRA, because it runs wider towards the top instead of more narrow. I experienced on the GS the same effect, after trying the narrow stock screen, a higher but just as narrow MDI (Puig) screen and an even higher but still just as narrow MRA vario screen (with a screen sliding up) before ending with the perfect Wunderlich screen wich ran wider towards the top and which was adjustably to an angle low enough to reduce turbulence / noise to a more or less acceptable level (it was still too high in that respect, but finally wide enough at least):

Of course with the gusty crosswinds today it can be very hard to objectively judge / compare a screen, but your observations do make sense. I was very happy to find out that my Shoei Multitec was somehow more narrower or aerodynamically different compared to the BMW System 4, giving significantly less pressure on the helmet (or so it feels to me), besides canceling all the low frequency rumbling sound. So helmet pressure is not an issue anymore really, I can always flip up the MRA spoiler in strong headwinds. Shoulder pressure would be a problem to me, although I am "only" 1.90m. I think I'll stick with the MRA, but wouldn't mind switching bikes with you back and forth for a proper comparison.

Sorry to hear that SECDEM wasn't the right choice. It still is for me. Pressure on the shoulders, yes. But I prefer that to lots of pressure and turbulence against head and helmet. And I like the looks of the SECDEM on the bike. Less important though, but still a factor of certain importance to me...
All that said; MRA double bubble is also a good screen, less pressure on the shoulders and chest, but more turbulence and buffeting hitting me on head & helmet...

@AJ: How tall are you (in metres)?
Pressure on the helmet on average is the same as with the MRA Vario.
I'm still in doubt whether to try the MRA DB screen...

I have read somewhere it could help. (Handguards)
