I'm 1.80m tall, with long legs... yeahyeahyeah.gif

I believe now that between 1,80 and 1,90 metres there is point that a lower screen is better for taller persons.

Hi guys. I just finished a 7 day 3000 km ride on a hired R1200GS Adventure in Namibia and we travelled at 170 - 180 kph for long periods and sometimes 200kph which is about top speed for the Adventure. It has a FANTASTIC Screen. Turbulence in a cross wind but only if it is a hard wind. I am writing as I sit in the airport on my way back to UK and thinking "How can I get a screen like that on my TDM for the trip to Scotland over the Bank Holiday Weekend coming up?" Don't say to me "Sell the TDM and get a GS-A !!!" But seriously, we need to do some scientific analysis of this.
The GS A Screen is very wide. I think an MRA Vario is ok but the the turbulence maybe comes from wind coming around the side of the screen.
The GS A screen also has those little curved deflectors attached to the top of the tank on each side to stop wind coming around the screen.
We had 2 Adventures and one R1200GS on the trip and the guy on the standard GS had a much harder time than us on the Adventures. BM have really sorted that screen. OK, it is the size of a supertanker bridge and really kills the GS' top speed but 200 is till ok.

So can we get a summary of everyone's experience?

I have a Yamaha Extended Touring Screen on my TDM and above 70mph I get buffetting of my head. I am 1.85 (6') high.

The Double-bubble seems good.
The Vario has noise - even reviews on the HPS Site say this.

I want to try and lift the screen off the fairing a few mm to allow some air under the screen to stop the vacuum behind the screen tha seems to suck the turbulence onto the rider's head.
The BMW Tobinator does this.

I don't care about looks if I can travel 1000km and feel great at the end of it - which I did on the behemoth GS A. By the way, at 180 kph it uses 11 lters per 100 km. wow.

I don't want to have to buy a few screens before I find my best one. Maybe we can have a track day and try out different screens?
I'm in UK, sorry.

Peter

Hey, Peter.
I've cut a bigger hole in the bottom an old screen on my 850 to see what that does to the turbulence. Only problem is I've been off the road for a while so only a quick blast to test it so far. I'm in Derby as well so if you want to meet up somewhere and have a look at my (rough at the moment) efforts I'm hoping to be riding again next week so just let me know through the forum and we can arrange something.

And I have drilled a few holes in my MRA double bubble screen:

Now it looks like an ERMAX screen. I tried one of those but it was a poor build; didn't fit properly and I returned it and got my money back...
H haven't tested the modified MRA doubble bubble V yet, but I'll share my experience with you as soon as I get around to do it... wink.gif

Anybody had a look at Eagle in Perth, Westayleer, Oz:

I've used their screens on other machines, and they seem to do the job nicely. Certainly, another option.

Went for a ride with the modified MRA screen today. Good weather condition, sunny and calm light air.
No turbulence, only even air hitting me in the upper chest area (don't ask about wind noise; I still wear my EARfoon plugs...) and less turbulence when driving i traffic (behind cars in 70 to 90 km/h).
I think I can say for sure that the five holes I drilled forming the "V" at the bottom of the 'bubble' has helped to stabilize the air flow. Don't know how the effect will be under more windy conditions, though.

There's still some airpressure againt my chest, less on the head/helmet than before and almost nothing when driving in 50 to 60-70 km/h.
So my conclusion so far is that drilling holes like I did seems to work just the way I hoped: even and calmer airflow and less buffeting.

I'm not a great photografer, but here's a couple of shot anyway, to show you how the screens look fitted onto the bike...:

I have done some researh myself, and finally came to the conclusion that the standard screen works best for me. I'm quite tall, 199 cm (whatever that makes in ' and ")
