The two shafts in the gearbox both have a bearing at either end. Four bearings in total, but Yamaha say that only 3 are replaceable.

On the output shft (one with the sprocket on eventually), apparently the larger bearing isn't replaceable with a new one.

Is this right?

Did they say why? Bearing not available? Not possible to remove/fit?

Didn't remove mine.....but if the other end is replaceable dunt see why sprocket end ain't!?

I beleive output shaft and bearing come as one part. The bearing will come off but sourcing from anywhere but Yam may be a pain, as the bearing has a locating clip groove and and a small roll pin in the outer race. 3vd models anyhow.

Thats what Yamaha are telling me, i.e. it isn't available as a replacement bearing.
However, at the end of the day, it is just a shaft through a bearing. I can get the bearing from a local bearing stockist, i.e. the right size including the groove, and whilst the anti-rotation pin is desirable, its nothing that bearing loctite won't sort. The large bearing is the same size as the large bearing on the other gearbox shaft, so I don't understand why Yamaha are reluctant to sell it for this application.

Let you know how I get on.

Those types of bearings (groove and locating peg) are freely available, as they are used on many two-stroke crankshafts including X7, RG250, RD350LC & YPVS

Have you had a rummage through the microfiches yourself? Think there's a set in the knowledgebase, if not this site has them but alas not the relevant part numbers.

Well, despite all the warnings from Yamaha techies, I got the whole thing separated. Lots of heat, a hydraulic press and a lickle prayer and hey presto, a pile of bits on the floor!I've sourced a new bearing, a mere £18.75. Better than Yamahas' quote of £191.00 for the shaft and gear and bearing complete.

New bearing does not have the pin, but that is not an issue, as all that does is pevent the outer race turning. Given a liberal dose of Loctite bearing adhesive, plus the circlip in the groove and the cases being clapmed together rather tightly at that point, that race is going nowhere.
That said, it would not be any hardship to drill a small blind hole in the outer case and fit a pin.

Given that this engine obviously had a hard life and then a catastrophic stop due to the bigends failing, the gearbox shows very little wear, just full of metal slivers from the shells.
Photos of a 4TX rebuild will come later if anyone is interested.
Mike

You might find drilling into the outer race of a bearing a little harder than you think blink.gif (unless of course you have access to some very tough drills tongue.gif )
