hello visitors of the pigsty,
i am still up to my neck in the bureaucratic nightmare of regulating all the inheritance issues and try to find a job to sustain my existance, but i think i will succeed in the end.
so i thought i might share a little anecdote of a little rideout with my dad about 10 years ago.
today's episode: time travel in the sauerland. or: it's more fun to ride a slow bike fast than a fast bike slow
about 1997ish, nordhelle, sauerland, germany
it was one of the rare and much cherished occasions when my dad and me were able to coordinate our timetables to go for a ride together.
my girlfriend of then rode pillion on the tdm and dad followed on "ye olde xt".
we rode small and twisty roads at moderate speeds, dad being more a connaisseur of the landscape than a leaning angle addict.
at one point on our rideout we stopped for a little break at the well known parking lot at the nordhelle, sauerland.
this place consists of a formerly good conditioned road, very cool twisty uphill curves. the local crotch rocket bunch always gathered there to show off kneesliding and power ranger suit fashion
so we watched the usual display of moderate riding skills and racing exhausts...
at some point my dad asked me: "son, you can do better than that, can't you?"
"well dad, i might give it a try. but it is so immature....should i really???"
and with a knowing smile on his lips he tossed me the keys to the xt and said "go."
"ok, so be it" and i folded my legs on the xt that was adorned with the lowered seat...
the first four trips up and down i just followed the crowd, looking for weaknesses and i found one.
in the last curve normal riders can reach about 110kph (acers can do a lot better, but none of the present riders were) and the sportsbikers reached about 140kph on the short straight before this curve and had to decel hard to the aforemetioned 110kph.
the xt barely managed 120 on this straight, but it corners well
so i just had to close the trottle when the power rangers really had to brake hard and i was able to pass them
the whole crowd cheered and the power rangers stopped for the obligatory cigarette on the other side of the road.
and then dad really put the icing on the cake by proclaiming:
"not bad for 44hp, eh?"
and his eyes were sparkling with mirth.
(the guys with the slow-fast bikes went away with their tails firmly wedged between their legs
)
so, i hope i could tell a little about how great a father he was and perhaps this memory puts a little smile on your face as it did on mine, when i remembered this anecdote in a great conversation with pict.

spyball alarm/immob, bluespot brake calipers and Stainless hoses, Fournales air adjustable shock with Remote Resevoir, forks raised 10mm thru yokes, racetech linear fork springs in 15 wt oil, Kappa wingrack/luggage, heated grips, Kedo handguards, dual heat controller to power heated jacket liner and or pants!!, Stebel 136DB horn, K&N air filter, colour matched Baglux tank cover (magnetic tank bag modified to fit cover), osram +50% headloight bulbs, headlight protector,"NitramSpecial" parking loight, tail light indicators all running on LED's & incorporate "Lite Buddies", MK7 Scottoiler fitted, taller screen, 2-2 stainless steel CCC's, Devil stainless down pipes. MKI Renntec engine crash bars & sump guard.
engine changed july 2007 on a dyno run it made 79.1BHP / Torque 59.9Had a brief flirtation with a 1999 MKIIa but it blew an exaust valve on the M5 so was sold on to be repaired.

yes indeed, it's the very same XT, i still have the low seat...
i was a little reckless driver back then, but now i have matured soo much, to better fit into the "boring tdm rider" cliché as i try to prove in this little thread
and when the weather is dry and cold and the gravestone is set, ill ride to the cemetry with it and smoke a pipe there. i'll take one of the pipes my dad has carved for me
and remember the good times...cheers to you too, pict and tony and all friends from carpe

Great story Ralf, I've always fancied an XT as a second bike. In my teenage years - on a Yammie RD400 I once unknowingly overtook my Ma & Pa on their way back from a night out. They were doing about 45 mph in my Dad's Ford Granada, I went past at about 90 and shot off into the distance. My Mum recognised me and gave me a huge bollicking when I got home 
. My Dad followed this up by giving me a lecture on riding within my limits (he was a decent road racer in his day). As I left the room suitably chastised, my Dad said whispered "nice riding though....".

no, pict, no need to feel sorry about anything. IMO you certainly did not spoil anything, i really laughed about that one. it is the magic of the pig totem, that makes me able to make fun about everything, including myself.
matlock, the XT is a great change of pace compared to the tdm, it has a certain agricultural charme and i always loved thumpers. it is motorbiking reduced to the very essence of it.
i really liked your anecdote, and though i dislike the adv-forum standard phrase, i use it here: thanks for sharing your experience.

sunday paul from the german tdm site and i visited the bike show in dortmund, germany. pics and report will follow soon.
toda's episode: truffles found in the cellar.
just ruhr-valley, germany
i was in the cellar right now, cleaning out some relics of a former life, and between all these old books, junk and paper i found this:
it is an old paper print photo, long before the advent of affordable digicams. it was shot on the 5th dec 1993, just before an short but epic ride on my tenere.
appropriate background music provided by mary hopkins - those were the days
it was on a cold but dry december day, this 5th day of the twelfth month 1993 a.d..... i still hat the reduced A1 license, that means 34 hp in the now old, then new 660 single.
my levior flip up was damaged and sent back to the manufacturer for repairs, but i did not want to miss the traditional winter riders meeting in essen, haus scheppen. so i took the open lid from my moped days and the MX goggles and went out.
it was about -10°C or so and after 30km the oil temp gauge still refused to wake up and put the pointer needle into the range of the scale.
when i arrived and lifted my goggles the plexi glass just disintegrated.... the windchill was too hard for this material.. summer use only.
nonwithstanding this little mishap, i went to the counter and ordered my usual three pots of coffee: one for each boot, to get the circulation running again and one to warm my fingers. on the fourth cup my shaking had reduced significantly, that some coffee even found the way into the pig.
soon after i returned from the counter, to chat with the usual group, they looked at me in a strange way.
i asked: "what's wrong?"
"your lips are bleeding"
due to the open helmet and the subzero temps, my lips froze and then burst open a little. when the coffee started to warm the mouth, the blood began to flow.
bloody 'ell.
after several litres it stopped and i went home again. this time without goggles.....
the small scars have now disappeared completely but back then my girlfriend was a little aggravated because of my temporal kissing predicament.
ah, have i become soft over the years...old and soft
i was just eighteen and a half year old then and felt ndestructible like the top gear hilux. note the unlined leather jeans and the jacket made of simple nylon. no protectors or a waterproof liner. and i went down in this gear once or twice and survived with barely a sratch.... lucky pig

coldest i did was 70km in -9°C ... at work i was grasping metal things just to cool down my burning hands. my right thumb acked all day.

hello,
big update on this blog thingy thead.
some motorcycle related stuff, some personal and this and that....
after a period of great uncertainity cosidering my professional future i can happily announce that the pig has found a job at the foundation that sponsored my dissertation project.
i'll work as an office manager with a really great bunch of people there. i'm happy as a pig in mud.
next item on the plate will be moving, to reduce commuting distance. we'll find something, i'm sure. my income will be secure for the next 3 years. and i'll be a civil servant helping postgrad students with their sponsorship and other stuff too. a job that will be very rewarding.
so share a virtual beverage of your choice with me.
as a little therapy against all the stress of selling dad's business i chose today to give the bikes the obligatory spring cleaning. done
the joy of the new job and new beginning in a different place is a little affected by thoughtfullness, because this is the first time that i cleaned ye olde XT without dad having a look and smile because of the beauty and immaculateness of the XT.
but now i made another step to my "good bye trip". the XT needed a new battery and a thorough cleaning. now i still have to put on new tyres and then i will do my tribute ride to his grave and smoke a pipe carved by him, with his favourite tobacco: murray's erinmore flake. he really loved the room note of this stuff.
just could not make the trip with a dirty bike...
and now for something completely different

the last couple of months feeled like a test, what will life throw at me next....but i will cope...
i don't think i can manage to attend any meetings this year. reorganising life still takes up a lot of time and money. we'll see...
