I'm not very good at carbs, these are very sophisticated devices that involve many parts (twice more than FI systems) and require sharp tuning (no ECU-tunning available). Some people say it's crap compared to fuel injection.

That said, like any other mech systems :
- all rubber parts will wear, crack or rip & need special attention or replacement.
- metal moving parts wear too and need replacement : needle & emulsion tube, fuel intake closing...

Known 3VD's weaknesses are carbs & valves (especially with adaptative exhausts).
Got both of them with my old XTZ, I sold it before getting mad.
Ignition problems are not common, except when rubber parts get old (oil, grease, UV light & ozone attack rubber parts).

so if i did understand your answer you mean that one of my problems could come from the exhaust that is in my tdm ( it's a HArpoon modified). ?http://i269.photobucket.com/albums/jj63/mechinha/tdmmecha.jpg

That's not specific to TDM, all four strokes engines are sensitive to exhaust modifications.
When you put different mufflers, the risk is that the exhaust gas speed is higher.
It leans the mixture and gives exhaust gaz a higher temperature.
Exhaust valves do not like very much very high temperatures...

But in closed control systems like the 900, which have lambda sensors, won't these compensate the fuelling? Or are they just to ensure that emissions don't rise above a certain level and won't "care" about leaning of the mixture?

ranting.gif yeah (gulp) sorry i forgot that part the spark gets black and smell the hell out of gas included in the exhaust systems. the bike has got 20.530 km and until so far she seems like silk now it's like a catcus - always hurting me.
God be pity on me...oh by the way coils have been measured and tested and it apears to be ok the 3 guys they' ve all agreed that the problems coould come from the carburetor or the needles but i' really don't know...my fellow eupi does not yet told him my troubles. ah celticbiker someone told once that "in madness lies the key for reason and true" so i believe that i'm in the right place eheheheh

Mechinha,

Have you looked at your fuel pump at all?

I freely admit that I haven't trawled through 7 pages of this thread in detail, but if I understand it correctly, you get fouled (dirty) plugs fairly quickly, you have done the emulsion tubes but they weren't really that bad (judging by the pictures), you have checked and eliminated the ignition side of everything and stuck some tape every where.

OK, if that is the correct gist of what I've read, then look at the fuel pump. I had exactly the same symptoms after I rebuilt mine last year, and it was a holed diaphragm in the fuel pump, allowing too much fuel through. Worse was when the bike was parked up, fuel would run down and into the cylinder and fill up the exhaust.

Have a look here:--

http://www.carpe-tdm...o...882&hl=fuel

It maybe not at all related to your woes, but you have tried everything else ....... what have you got to lose?

Hi bud, if it is always the same plug that fouls might be worth having a compression test done, could be worn rings/piston on one cylinder causing plug fouling, if not too serious try running a plug one grade hotter, helps to burn off excess oil, only a temp fix tho, if compression is down needs a proper dose of looking at

robgosty and stormy. thank you guys for your great help. at this present time the guy that sold me the bike has take it to try to guess what is wrong. i will give him after i translate you wisdom words the sugentions that you gave me.
he has two chances: the bike returns brand new or he will give me for free a 95 africatwin. the third option it is not to be consider. it will probably be the cause of a great pain (for him). i hope that i never consider that 3 option.

i'll give more notices.

thanks.

by the way i have search a lot of information in the net and i've spotted several sites that speak of carpe-tdm but one of them i found particulary fun: www.advrider.com in the sections beasts we can find our tdm. to review. tongue.gif

Like the man said, you may need to get the compression tested as you might need the valves adjusting or there could be wear. If you've changed the type of engine oil it could be a cause. May need the carbs balancing.

Hello there, reading through all the pages of the thread, i would suggest you find a more competent engineer. The guys at carpe are awesome both in knowledge and will to help, but there is a limit to the help you can get from the internet. Some times you have to see with your own eyes and hear with your own ears the problem.

It seems to me that if your engineer was a little more experienced he would have saved you a lot of trouble and stress.

Hope your bike is without problems now.

Tony, What's the cause of the petrol leak stain thing? unsure.gif

causes in order of likeliness

1) leaky petrol tap
to fix it take the tap off, and remove the 2 screws, pop down to your local plumbing supplies shop and replace the o-ring, assembly is the reverse of disassembly
2) perished fuel lines
replace the lot, cost is less that a tenner, 1meter/3.3feet should be enough, 2lines from tank to tap, 1 from tap to pump and 1 from pump to carbs
3) carb float bowl gaskets leaking
if you've had your carbs apart chances are these havent sealed or need replacing

worst case.....
4) petrol tank ....rusty/cracked etc
