When I started my bike this morning it fired up but did not to maintain the rev's, consequently it stopped running. I started it again but had to hold the throttle open until the bike had warmed up, once warmed up there doesn't seem to be a problem. Lunchtime was the same, turn the key press the button, fired up then stopped.

The bike is an 04 9er, has 16600 miles on the clock, garaged overnight, used everyday. The TCP was fixed at the Yammie dealer when I bought it last Feb.

HELP!

Another vote for the fast idle plunger. Easy to fix, just takes a bit of time 'cos of the tank lift etc.

Funny you say this I have got the same problem with my MKII 850 this morning, ordered a new starter solenoid, I believe this will cure the problem on my bike as I have had this problem before, it happens approx every 20000 miles or so.

good.gif Thank you all. Well that's Saturday sorted, I'll do the top box mod while I'm at it.

Serves me right for spending all last weekend washing and polishing the bike as I normally leave it dirty and manly looking!

As a possible "easy" remedy, using the pics in the knowledge base, with the aid of a small torch you can spy the offending silver plunger from the left hand side of the engine looking up and slightly forward (if I remember correctly). Try spraying with WD40 or similar and with a pair of long nose pliers, or like me, a pair of long 90degree circlip pliers grip the plunger and move it backwards and forwards. This helped my bike with exatcly the same problem.

Thanks for the tip - I think mine's playing up too.

Almost same pattern - 2004 with 19500 miles. Washed it on Saturday. Monday it started fine, but after a few minutes the idle rose to 2k rpm. After 25 miles it still idled at 2k, so I adjusted the idle down a bit. Same on the way home. Today it wouldn't idle when cold, but after a minute settled at 1k. This evening it seemed fine, so I hope a good coat of WD may stop it developing into anything more serious!

Cheers.

Just remember you'll need to "exercise" the small silver plunger by ....ahem...sliding it in and out unsure.gif ....
If I recall correctly it should be retracted when cold and protruding when hot. As it tends to stick in the hot, protruded position hence the reason your bike runs okay when the engine has warmed up. You may need to initially give it a gentle tap to break the hold of the corrosion and there after use lots of lubricant while moving the plunger in and out.

As I said earlier, this may help (it did for me) but will never be as affective as completely stripping the unit down, cleaning it up and lubricating it.

Here's a picture of the offending cold start device as viewed from the left side of the engine.

Any plunger won't be of any use if not correctly lubricated, even when hot & protruding... tongue.gif

May as well check the choke as well (your model has a choke?)

The 900 is fuel injected and has automatic cold start program, no choke.

Done it! plus the air box mod, what difference. Now all I've got to do after paying Mr Met Police, tax, MOT, is save the pennies for a new air filter.

Thanks Again all

Sounds like I have the same problem!!! I have an 03 9er with 21800 on the clock - just went out on it and was fine for a couple of miles, was thinking how nice & smooth it was running, then came to a roundabout and the engine died. restarted straight away but as soon as the revs dropped to 3k rpm it cut out again. managed to force it back home - will try the plunger as has been suggested & see if it does the trick...

The plunger only pushes the idle speed up until the engine warms up. If you managed a couple of miles before it cut out, it seems like you have a different problem. Even when the plunger is working, the idle speed with a cold engine is only about 2k.

Well - made it into London today without any hassle; must have just been having an off day! Fighting with the wind is no fun though... front wheel feels like its slipping away with the gusts!

Oh - and just found out the TPS recall wasn't done on my bike so booked it in at the dealers...

Would you believe it ..this has just started on my '02 9er with 25K on the clock. Hasn't caused major inconvenience just need to manage throttle on start up but it is a nuisance. Thanks for link to the solution/s (by the way how do you do that?) and for ET's excellent write up......

I'll give it a go over the w/e if I can cobble up a long enough screw driver. By the way what's the airbox mod all about?.... I'll check other threads so no real need to reply...ta

cheers

then just use the 'insert link' button using that link.
