
Bar Ends ?

I'm wanting to change the stock bars off my '06 900 for something a bit flatter in angle. (But I cant find an allen key that fits the bloody 'ole in the bar ends.)
I'm slowly getting a limp wrist! So I'm thinking new bars and ends to go!
I read somewhere they were designed to damp vibration?
Prithee enlighten this old bugger...I just turned 55 and am planning to fettle the chariot for some travel with the memsahib.
As well can any of the aussies on here give a review of the RJays top boxes, luggage etc ?. They're a bloody sight cheaper than Givi round Brisbane and they look alright, bright young thing at the Yamaha place reckoned the included brackets and whatnot were "universal" then again she thought a TDM was a mid range trail bike.

Not just vibration but handlebar oscillations too i.e. supposed to help prevent tank slappers. On my 99 850 the bike still generates a wobble at low speeds <30 riding no hands (no, not tyre or steeringhead related etc.), and an increasing tank slapper until I put my hands on the grips again. This oscillation is not apparent when riding with both hands on the grips. So do they work?? I suppose I'll have to try riding without the bar ends in the manner described above.

They make no difference at all on my bike except to fill the holes at the ends of the bars.

Definately more vibrations through the handlebar without. Hands went all tingly after about 1hr of inspired driving.

My TDM :

to fit : led brake light strip, replacement heated grips

Isnt that supposed to be something to do with wheel balance, tyre wear or phases of the moon?
I cant remember a bike that didnt start doing it at low speed.

My Mk1 has non-standard end weights , the type that mushroom out as you tighten the allan screw. I would like to fit the standard Yam type but there's nothing to screw them into. I take it there should be some sort of threaded insert in the bar ends?

i know that a few people on here have threaded the ends of their renthals to accept standard bar ends so they can fit handguards, not sure what size tap they used though.

I suspect my bars may not be standard. I remember the guy I got the bike from offering me another set with a slightly different profile. I didn't take them cause I was riding the bike back to Glasgow from Rochdale and they would have been in the way. Maybe they were the original bars!

If it is a "standard" Yamaha thread, then it is M16 x 1.5mm.
I bought those taps myself last year along with the special ones for recovering the threads in the carbs for the jets, the M6 x 0.5mm.
Those big barends look like they are the same as a Thunderace, heavy buggers, but boy do they work. The Ace was almost painful to ride without them.

OK, I gotta ask though, why would anyone want to ride a bike at 30mphish with their hands off the bars? and then wonder why the bars waggle a bit???

Those stainless ones I showed are about 380 grams each as I recall (normal ones for the 900 are less than 310), and do seem to have an effect.

Stormy,
Occasionally one may need to make adjustment to oneself in the manliness department. Whilst I may not need both hands to acomplish this manoeuvre, it is neccesary to stand up at times, thus no hands on bars. Wobble wobble weavle and rapidly sit down to grasp handlebars and even worse (trapped testes arrrgggh).
Also occurs for even more minor events such as adjusting a glove (seated).
