*blushes* thank you. But you should hear me speaking. blink.gif rotflmmfao.gif Ian can tell you about my strong german accent. In writing i manage to find the words faster, when talking often words seem to evaporate from my memory and it feels terribly clumsy.
i've become anglophil since i went to my fist english course. i accompanied my parents to an evening school course. that was when i still went to elementary school. so my passion for english language and especially the humour go back quite some time.
having studied german and english linguistics helped a bit as well.... wink.gif

The European Commission has announced an agreement whereby
English will be the official language of the EU, rather than
German, which was the other contender. Her Majesty's Government
conceded that English spelling had room for improvement and has
therefore accepted a five-year phasing in of "Euro-English".

In the first year, "s" will replace the soft "c". Sertainly,
this will make sivil servants jump for joy. The hard "c" will be
dropped in favour of the "k", Which should klear up some konfusion
and allow one key less on keyboards.

There will be growing publik enthusiasm in the sekond year, when
the troublesome "ph" will be replaced with "f", making words like
"fotograf" 20% shorter.

In the third year, publik akseptanse of the new spelling kan be
expekted to reach the stage where more komplikated changes are
possible. Governments will enkourage the removal of double letters
which have always ben a deterent to akurate speling. Also, al wil
agre that the horible mes of the silent "e" is disgrasful.

By the fourth yer, peopl wil be reseptiv to steps such as
replasing "th" with "z" and "w" with "v".

During ze fifz yer, ze unesesary "o" kan be dropd from vords
kontaining "ou" and similar changes vud of kors be aplid to ozer
kombinations of leters. After zis fifz yer, ve vil hav a reli
sensibl riten styl. Zer vil be no mor trubls or difikultis and
everivun vil find it ezi to understand ech ozer. ZE DREM VIL FINALI
COM TRU!

wrenching a little

hi all, at last i managed to tear out the wheels of ye olde XT and went to the tyre dealer.
there i purchased a set of metzeler tourance, went back from the 130/80 to the stock 120/90 17 on the rear. the rim is too narrow to accomodate the tyre in an appropriate manner.

i also changed the front disk rotor and the pads (abm wave and lucas sintered pads). perhaps there will be something close to decelleration now. the TÜV disliked the old rotor, worn thin.

Burscheid, Bergisches Land, Germany

Relocation nearly complete.

Hello friends,

soon I will resume my usual muddy presence in this wonderful forum.
My relocation to a place closer to work was successful and I could cut my commute by half.
The Dicke and ye olde XT are still in Sprockhövel, but i will collect them soon. I had no internet for the last few weeks, and too much to do to post from work
But now I live right in the middle of the curves in one of Germany's nicest motorbike regions.
My new place can provide shelter for man and bike as well, so if travellers pass through I can offer a place to sleep, eat and wrench.

More to come.

Hello friends of the misadventures of the pig,

another short update about the migration:

the TDM is in the new home as well and I fetched most of my tools now.

Sunday Paul from the German forum dropped in and we changed chain and sprockets on his MKI.
Pulled out the swinging arm and mounted the new chain endless and unopened. It was really fun to get my hands dirty again.
Later on we had a little test drive around the "Grosse Dhünn Talsperre" I chose ye olde XT, cause both bikes have to go to the German MOT, the TÜV and the tyres on the Dicke are quite worn. Still enough to be legal, but no more fun.

We even found some power rangers on their crotch rokets, but they did not want to play. Seems they have been told to beware of old enduro singles with local number plates....I lost the advantage of the old number plate, no one can be fooled by the disguise of a not local driver wink.gif

So slowly we are making progress to a level of normality.

BTW this will be the first time, the XT will be one day out of the TÜV time: I lost the horn switch. The plastic knob just crumbled. Blimey, it was barely 14 years old.
So I had to order a replacement from Kedo, 'cause: no horn, no TÜV in Germany.

Ye olde XT will pass with flying colours, I only worry a little, if the TDM will pass the emission control. She runs a little on the rich side. The emulsion tubes are not worn yet, but I am a little concerned.

I will report of course.

Ah, and the bacon slicer on the single works great, now it is a brake that deserves its name.

Glückauf

Hello friends of bacon misadventures and TPS-club menbers,

99.975 km Bergisches Land, Germany

Today's episode: to TÜV or not to TÜV.

So on Tuesday I tok the XT out of the garage and rode to the TÜV place in the nearby industrial area. But I was greeted with a long deserted facility. After a few enquiries in the car workshops nearby I found out that there is no TÜV in my neck of the woods any more.
Hm, so I found a small garage and towing service that advertised daily visits by TÜV engineers.
I asked them, if it were possible to get the two bikes checked, but the engineer was scheduled for the afternoon. Too bad, I had to work a little then.
One phone call later, the shop owner told me: 15 minutes. He'll come right now.

After 15 minutes some grey haired guy in sandals arrived in an crappy VW polo.

He checked the emissions and the lights, leafed through the documents and stuck the plaque on the plate.
"Just fetch the other bike while I'll write the certificate"

So off I went an returned with the Dicke.

After giving the documents a cursory glance, he commented on the worn rear tyre: Buy a new one soon. -OK.
Emission control went well, too. The shop owner pulled the sensor out of the pipe, before the numbers would increase over the limit.

Certificate and plaque!

120€ and 20minutes that made a pig happy.

Glückauf

Here it's €30 if the MOT is included in a regular service (all MOT points are checked in a service anyway). €60-80 for a separate MOT check.

First a little update on the TDM: I managed to ride the phenomenal amount of 1150km this year, 650km on a day trip with Paul from the German forum on the XT.
So let's just forget about this year....
In November I dug out the TDM for a 50km batt-charging run an thus completed the 100.000km. In December I bought myself a Chistmas Present: a fresh set of Contis Road Attack
The Metzlers were worn as the TÜV guy mentioned.....so, perhaps I can do my X-mas ride on the Dicke...

But today I was out on the XT, on a special trip:

35450 km ye olde XT, Bergisches Land, Germany

Today's episode: a promise fulfilled

One year ago my life just went upside down, as my dad died right beneath my hands. All my CPR skills as a former firefighter were not enough to save his life.
So my future planning went down the drain when I realized that I had to liquidate his business and everything. A few months later I found a great job an relocated from the Ruhr Valley to the Bergisches Land
Right into one of the nicest motorbike and mountainbike regions Germany has to offer, moving together with my future wife, Anni.
I promised dad and myself, that I would do a tribute ride on his old XT, today it would be turned into reality.....Would it be a good idea? A cathartic experience or rather self-torture?
(No pigtures this time, I was just not in the mood to stop ant take out the cam, sorry)

So this afternoon I donned the winter gear and took the XT out of the garage. The big single fired up after the first push of the starter button, just as if she were eager to do this ride with me.
The weather ist gray, the sky cloudy and the roads are wet and slippery.
I tenderly warm up the engine and take it easy on the first kms.
I choose a route that consists of some parts I rode with dad, following his XT, enjoying the sound of the single and grinning, having a good time - just a father and his son on the road.
As the oil temp reaches 80°C i open up the throttle some more and the XT greedily sucks in the cold winter air. The Tourance tyres give confidence and where at first I brake early and lean moderate, I slowly get into the feeling of riding again.
Images of trips with my father that I thought I'd long forgotten merge with the view of the roads we once rode together.

I started with a heavy heart, but the closer I get to the forest cemetry the better I feel about it. The sky darkens as the sun is setting and it becomes more and more overcast.
But my gear is warm and waterproof and I contiue.
After traversing the Bergisches Land I follow the "Tourist scenic route: German alley route" signs, roads I've enjoyed long before the tourism institutions put up these signs.
I pass several abandoned heavy industry sites as I proceed deeper into the Ruhr Valley area. When the old industries died, no one knew what to do with the heavily polluted sites...some were sold to the Chinese and some genius came up with the idea to put a plaque up somewhere and call it an industrial memorial site
Thus the "Tourist scenic route: route industrial culture" Route Industriekultur was born and now is an impressive part of a concept to preserve the old Ruhr Valley monuments.

When I reach the "Waldfriedhof" (forest cemetry) it is completely dark now. I take out my keychain LED and start looking for the grave.
There it is. Just a brown stone with his name and dates of birth and death. Plain and without ornaments as he wanted it. The location could not be better. Big trees loom over the site and give the whole area an air of dignity and solace.
He just loved trees and gardening, so there was no better place to find for his last bed.

I stay some time, thinking some thoughts and shed a tear or two.

Later I compose myself again, snap a silent salute, just as I always did, when he watched me go out for a ride from the window.

It is cold and dark now, but my heart is light and my mind is at peace.

I negotiate some small city streets and decide to take the Autobahn for the last leg of the ride home.

I fill up, lube the chain to make the XT ready for the next trip.

I enter the flat an Anni greets me with a loving embrace an I can say: "Es ist gut - it is good."

Happy Holidays and Ride Safe
Glückauf

My Dad didn't ride a bike, it was a sailing boat for him but I know the feelings you describe. Three years now and I still miss the old sod every day.

Merry Christmas and a happy New year to you.
