Could do that, or go up to St Mary loch then across to East coast for a bite as someone mentioned.

I quite fancy St Marys Loch and then head west on the bit Hawmaw recommended, I think there's going to be several different runs going on this year.

Dunno what Tam suggested but this would summarise the Galloway experience while keeping off the A75where possible. Option to cut from "B" to "E"

I'll send out a few PMs next week to get mobile numbers so I can make contact on the Saturday morning.

Thanks Dandy. The loop has a mixture of twisties, coastal and upland scenery and other photogenic stuff - villages, old abbies etc. Surfaces are generally good. If there's a half-hour spare time when in Dumfries, I recommend a wee buzz down the Glencaple Road (past where I used to live) to the mouth of the River Nith and round by Caerlaverock Castle, both for the road and for the visuals. There is also an important bird reserve - Peter Scott among others studied there. Important for migrating geese etc. Depending on taste, you can continue round to Dumfries, or I suggest a wee byway wander across the Lochar Moss via Powfoot (where an ailing Rabbie Burns tried the seaside air as a hoped for cure) to Ruthwell where (topical touch) a certain Mr Duncan (ahem!) opened the first bank in the world; it also has a nice old Celtic cross. Then continue on secondary roads to Annan and rejoin the main drag eastward. Route:

Change in plan! looks like I will be finishing work at 02:00ish on friday morning now so depending on the weather and my ability to pack in the dark should be able to meet up that morning some place with those using M6 on the way up. I think last year we joined up at the little chef off the A65. Any place will do as long as I'm on me bike tongue.gif Shame Hawman is day tripping as I'm in the same boat money wise. The more I earn the more she spends dry.gif Should have enough for a nice surf and turf at the pub though rotflmmfao.gif + nice glass of spritser rolleyes.gif

Historical PS

1) John Paul Jones, founder of the US Navy, was born at Arbigland: see "A" on this map - Visit My Website He and his US mates later mounted a fairly shoddy invasion of England! (at Whitehaven, across the Solway) rotflmmfao.gif

2) Keep in the good books - send the wife/GF/whoever a card from Sweetheart Abbey (at New Abbey: see "B" on the same map), where Devorgilla, the wife of John Baliol (early King of Scotland) buried his embalmed heart - hence the word. Dead romantic, ye might say? rolleyes.gif

3) The back-country of what is now the Galloway Forest (between "B" and "C" on the map in my first posting #243) used to be the haunt of Sawney Bean and family - legendary cannibals who waylaid travellers, as a possible origin of the Sweeney Todd story, so don't break down - you never know..... hide.gif

Keep yer eyes peeled if heading back on the A75 - it's generally fast, notoriously populated by nutters (present company excepted) heading to/from the Stranraer ferries. unsure.gif
