Had a small coolant weep from the back of the pump housing so removed the pump and ... I knew there was a small washer on the impeller shaft because the schematic told me so. Things were going just great but I must have blinked at the wrong moment because that washer dropped into the sump. Much cursing and inspection did not help or reveal its whereabouts.

I bet I am not the first to do this so is it a sump off job? Is it likely to be sitting in the sump or is there some other hiding place enroute to the sump? The oil is already drained so no real drama if it has to come off - looks easy enough.

I feel like a read dick of course - any magic solution here based on past events? Cheers

It's easily done, the washer is really light and sticks to the pump until you pull it off the spline.  A small diameter extending stick magnet might retrieve it.

No luck with a tiny magnet on a piece of wire...yet. Trying hard not to leave the magnet in there too - been that sort of day. But it sounds like I'm correct in assuming it was a steel bugger then?

Yes, it's a really thin steel wan.

iirc the washer should fall down to the lower part of the sump, so if you do need to remove it at least you won't have to remove the strainer section too.  You'll prolly need a new gasket though.

Been there & done that.

Yep! time to remove the sump, which iirc means dropping the headers.

Get your new gasket before commencing work.

Now I just fly everywhere.

]Found it! Thanks to Thomas the Tank Engine.

Perhaps I should explain. I was trying to find a strong magnet that was thin enough to fit between the pump drive gear and the casing. There isn't much room, just enough for a washer to drop of course. But I was scared of dropping the magnet in too. I had another Thomas with a broken coupling magnet so I took it out of its plastic case and fitted it into some heatshrink tubing. I first tried some electrical tape but it wasn't rigid enough to poke around in the sump, and the tubing was just right. So five seconds after inserting it, out came a washer. Piece of cake.

So if you are ever as silly as me and drop the washer, try to get hold of a small rare earth type magnet if you can find one, or similar and try this.
