My bike came with Givi top box and pannier mounting kit fitted, the plate is an M3 for a monokey top box. I've already removed the side mounts and the brace bars for the top box mount as I think that if I need panniers then my soft ones will suffice. I would like a top box however and if I behave or more likely play my cards right then Santa might bring me one!

If I'm going the Givi route then a plain V46 which costs around £200-£210 should fit straight on. But ideally I'd really like to tidy up the looks by getting rid of all the clutter and bars off the bike, reclaim my bungee hooks which had to be removed to fit the givi bars, and then fit and use one of the mounting plates that sits above the grab handle.

Never seen one of these mounting plates in real life and can't figure how they are fitted, there only seems to be 4 threaded holes under the grab handle. Anyone got close up pictures of their set up or like to recommend a plate/box combination of around 40/50litres that carries a reasonable amount of weight. And importantly one which won't bankrupt Santa?

Ta .... John

This is the expensive option - - SW Motech alurack -.

You then have to add an adapter depending on the type of box you have.

There are other options that clamp onto the existing grab rail that are much cheaper

I can get some pictures tomorrow but the ones on the site should give you an idea

Very quick look before work, that's very tasty (And expensive) Takes a Givi Monolock adapter but aren't Monolock for slower speed bikes such as scooters and monokey is for proper bikes? I won't be using a top box very much, a lesser known brand than Givi would suffice providing it's of decent quality, size and weight carrying capability.

Keep the ideas coming, ta.

I have monokey on the top box and monolock for the side bags. Both seem to hang on OK with normal riding and a few bumps as well.

Do it once, do it right and you won't be sorry.

They do adapters for all the fitments - Monolock, Monokey, Kappa, Trax etc.

I've had a Givi Maxia E52 for about 8 years now (with a lot of commuting) and the Alurack for about 5 - I'd highly recommend the combination but the rack does come in at about £110 all in. I think the box is about £200 but there are cheaper and smaller options but you do get what you pay for.

Givi universal mount is neatest and most compact.

Have had 45 litre boxes permanently attached to this for 8-9 years and nigh on 70,000 miles

Thanks for the replys, Pete the universal mount looks like it may damage the grab rail paintwork and I'm a bit anal about such things!

A guy I know has a Yamaha top box attachment (Part # 5PS-W0720-00-00) @ £74 and to this he has a monokey base fitted. He's away at the weekend but I hope to get a look at his setup asap. He tells me he has a friend with a monokey base fitted directly to the grab handle, not sure how though.

To guys with the alurack as pictured above fitted. The rear single bolt, is there a bolt beneath the yamaha badge in the centre? Does an M3 monokey base (The same as I have, picture in original post) bolt directly to the alurack?

I'll get this sorted within the next couple of weeks so I can get my note of to Santa laugh.gif

This might help you - here's a scan of the installation instructions for the Alurack -

basically a plate is screwed into threaded holes on the underside of the grab rail and the rear bolt screws into that. Two replacement bolts then use the front fixings for the grab rail along with spacers

Thanks Rob, that looks a very nice set up. So rack at £80 + adapter plate (SWM 551-632 for monokey) below @ £25 and job done.

Hopefully get to look at the Yamaha set up next week, then make my mind up and get that note off to Santa good.gif

Thanks Paddy it does up to a point. A couple of questions though.

1/ Monolock, most of the these are rated 3kg carrying load AFAIK, why not Monokey which all seem to rated 10kg?

2/ Does the plate touch the rear handle or are there spacers between the plate and handle? I don't much like the look of the rear clamps either (See pete7s post) as they touch the paintwork on the underside of the handle. As already said I'm a bit anal about avoiding scratching paintwork laugh.gif

I like the look of the Alurack, a fool and his money eh? ohmy.gif It'll probably be one of those or keep the monorack arms and just buy a box. Should make my mind up by the end of the week.

Thanks again Paddy.

The SW Motech detachable pannier racks are very good as well - 2 minutes & you can get rid of all the scaffolding good.gif
Not the prettiest, but then you only have them fitted when you carry the panniers

I know that i have carried more than 3kg in mine, lots of chocolate cake rotflmmfao.gif

I dont have any spacers between the grab rails and the plate, you could make up some yourself if you liked,

When i told off the old rack today, which has been on 4 years there was very little marks. good.gif

Thanks hallrob1

I ordered an SW Motech Alurack and Monokey adapter plate from the biker-discount link you posted. It arrived today and I fitted it this evening, probably the neatest option available and I'm well pleased. I just hope Santa got the note I put up the chimney at the weekend asking for top box.

IIRC Monolock boxes are single skin, Monokey double = stronger. I ran a Kappa (= same grade as Monolock) box for ages, loaded way over 3kg no problem. RSrocket "inherited" it and AFAIK it's still doing OK

The previous owner (slocoach from this parish) had it done at Motorcycle Seat Works in Bradford.

http://www.motorcycl...co.uk/home.html

Can't compare it to standard (As I haven't used one) but it is very comfy. I think slocoach told me it cost around £140 so I doubt if there is any gel involved. He also thinks it sits a little higher than standard, maybe up to an inch. This is ok for me (31" inside leg) but my brother who rides the bike quite a bit is very much on his tip toes, so much so I'm thinking of offering it up for swap against a standard one. If I do it won't be until spring time when I can borrow a standard seat to see if there is any real difference.

Is it not the rear subframe of the 900 thats weight rated rather than the racks?

I broke a Givi top box system like the one in the earlier pics - probably a bit heavier than it should've been plus eastern Ooropean road conditions. (although the UK is probably as bad now)
