I forgot to mention something else about using an alternative stator.

The stator from this BMW F650 alternator produces a maximum of 280W. That is when the rotor is fitted with magnets which are up to the job.

When fitted to an engine with a wider rotor, with larger and possibly stronger magnets, it will almost certainly be generating more power than in the original engine. On the downside there is less wire to dissipate the power, so if the new magnets are very much stronger the stator is at risk of failing early when loaded to the max.

We're going to have to wait and see on this !

Instead of rewinding periodically, it might be worth watching ebay (and other selling sites) for a late model CB500FA or CBR500 stator. They not only fit but they also seem to have the correct plug and ignition timing pickup. The only difference between one of those and a TDM900 seems to be a grommet on the outer case hole (The inner grommet is in the exact correct position too)....of course if you can't get a bargain one as backup then a £50 rewind is a great option.

Hi, could you confirm the above mentioned models fits to TDM900, i'm about to buy one of them thanks.

Asked the breakers for CBR500R stator dimentions , they replied "item is not suitable " for TDM. Can't find measurements anywhere.

The 900 dimensions are  115/54/26.5

I've PM'd you some details, hope they help

In the meantime there is a place in England doing TDM900 alternators for £80 exchange

http://www.bbbikesho...lternators.html

A TDM850 one (lower output) will fit and have all the grommets on the harness in the right place. That one looks like it's just a case of swapping the connectors over

If a bike with a lower output alternator stator is sold on then the new buyer ought to be made aware that they can't fit another 100W of lighting without restoring the alternator back to standard.  !

It looks like the information i was given by someone on a Honda forum about the CB500f or CBR500 stator is incorrect and the , and they're actually too large unfortunately

Confirmed by Edgis, an 850 alternator and pickup coil are a straight swap. The wiring is about 4 inches too short so you need to swap over the plugs/wire ends from the original alternator. From his measurements it looks like the alternator produces enough power with all lighting loads switched on.

Well done Edgis

I took the stator cover off to inspect the F650 stator coil and happy to say there seems to be no signs of overheating.

Only been 1500 miles since install, but there've been some high loads (all lights inc. high beam) for hours on end.

The white epoxy coating is still white, no sign of weakening.

This is good news.
Thanx for doing all the hard work.
It still irks me though not having worked out why they burn out in the first place

It was good to find it in good condition still .
I'll be checking it again in another few months and after a lot more riding.

I wonder if weak batteries or long periods without riding, when the battery will be able to suck many amps as soon as the bike starts for the first time is a contributing factorto the failures ?

With my '02 I'm sure that was the case as in the winter I'd all but flatten the battery starting it, but with this one I have got one of those new fangled lithium ion boosters.

When it won't start, just connect this for a couple of minutes and it puts charge into the battery and presto, fires up first time.

The Honda Firestorm (£19) stator arrived today, it looks like it has a bit more wire than the F650 but less than the started TDM, but physically it should be a perfect fit and the lead out wires are much longer than the F650 has.

Firestorm as far as I know were fuel injection contrary to a previous post

Dynojet still list a carb jet kit for the 97-03 models

They must have cut in FI during a model change, like the TDM.

I think they're Keihin make http://www.ebay.co.u...f8AAOSwmmxW4a10

Thread hijack
I have just removed the side casing from the stator side of the engine and found oil in the bottom is this OK?
Also where do I get a new gasket urgently?
Thanks

Yes it's fine, the alternator runs in an oil splash to help cool it.

Don't know about in a hurry but your local yam dealer is the best bet for a gasket.

If they have to order one and you are desperate then instant gasket (Yamaha grey is best for this) will get you by until it arrives.

When putting the case back on make sure you line it up using some threaded bar or similar or you could chip the shellac on the stator when the case gets pulled out of your hands.

More info here if you want it

BTW why did you remove it?

Thanks for the info. Celticbiker
I am doing the gear indicator in the tachometer mod. But couldn't remove the top bolt of the neutral switch cover in situ. Therefore had to remove the cover to get a socket on it it was as tight as hell. Got it off now but need a gasket to put it back together again.
I have ordered one from Fowlers

Gasket doesn't take long to make yersen. Ewe ideally need gasket paper, hole punch and some scissors.
