This is indeed good news. Not only do I now realise what has coursed my alternator to fail, which must have been riding for too long with an old weak battery, but also that a strong alternator output is not always the best solution when the bike isn't fitted with extras. On a side note, the reason the BMW 650 fits could be because the earliest models share the engine of a few Belgarda build Yamahas, XT 660, MT03, ...well it's a Minarelli engine and Aprilia also used it in Pegaso 650. I'll see what I find and keep you updated. A rewind in Malaysia may be so cheap that I'll go with that.

Mine is still going well, with extra led spots, extra led brakelights and sometimes a phone/satnav/camera plugged in. I'll pull it again in the autumn for another examination

It actually happened some years ago to a young french guy on a trip to the USA to present a new device at a high-tech fair.

He started making some tests with wires, displays, breadboards, etc, during the flight, which ended to an emergency landing in Canada, a police transfer in NYC and a full week under arrest and investigation. He was eventually released with a big fine.

A fine was a bit excessive i think !

I once shut down Glasgow airport, when a valve based clock i had built, which included RTV sealant, caused the new full colour x-ray scanner to display the rtv sealant in red, the same colour as explosives. This was only a year after 9/11 and the operators were new to the scanner.......so at about 2am in the morning of the day after i posted it to America the police were at my door demanding to know what was in the box, the bomb squad had closed the airport.
I showed the cop an identical clock and he relayed the info that everything was legal.

But apparently it was bomb swuad policy to disarm it anyway and about 2 weeks later the purchaser sent me photos of the clock case which looked like the insides had been ripped apart by one of those water filled shotgun cartridges, and then opened an ebay dispute because he thought i had used insufficient packing material despite my trying to explain it all to them !

I can understand that Americans have a fear for weapons, now there is a fear of electroics, too....

The fine was because the airplane company made a complain against him due to the unplanned landing in Canada and the resulting cost.

There was another "funny" story about that boy who designed a digital clock and brought it in school to show his teacher... and ended in custody because everybody in the USA think anything with a digit display is a bomb - the same thing all these movies show you, you know...

Well, my 900-2003 is now running again with a 850-1998 stator. 14,25volts idle measured at battery poles, 14,55 above 2500rpm. So I'm a very happy man and I am indeed happy I read this tread. Old stator is on it's way , hand carried by a fellow mc enthusiast, to UK. I have donated it to a rewind business whom didn't have a 900 stator.
Another thing I noticed was, that I immediately had adjust my idle speed. So apparently the low performance of the original stator over a long time before it finally capitulated. I'm looking forward to a tour to Malaysia soon, so I can find out if there's some more serious performance enhancement with the new stator.
