Okay, hi guys. I started a thread a few weeks back about annoying sounds from my exhaust, got a few tips and checked em out and it seems i have a small crack in right muffler.

Since there aint a good way of fixing it (says my dealer) i either need to get a new exhaust or try to modify it. And since i dont have any money its the mod thats gonna happen.

I have used the search function both here and on the french site, i got a few good ideas but feel i dont have enough to make up my mind how to do it.

So guys, what is the BEST way to modify the stock exhaust, i want it to be louder, but i wanna try and avoid "bad" loudness, then i dont mean the db, i mean that it sounds faked or something. So how should i proceed? Im thinking of maybe drilling with a 10bit drill at a little bit angle in the the pipe that sticks out, what do you think of that?

I can not afford to buy anything more or less since im starting my 4:th period on my university studies.

Thx guys, need more info? Ask and ill shall provide.

Okay, today i took a closer look to the exhaust, and it seems to me that all the noice is reduced in the collector box and not the pipes, is that correct? Then i need to remove the collector box and replace it with a Y-pipe right?

on my mkII I had Nexxus pipes, too quiet. So I used a massive drill bit, like 25mm masonary bit about 18" long and drilled right down the end cans. Sounded great after that!

I installed kerker slip-ons on my 92 and It sounds awesome. Not too loud but nice growl. They've been on since 95 and never a problem with them They're light weight to, took many lbs. off the exhaust system. By the way I'm new on the forum but had my TDM since new in 92. only problems I've had has been the needles and seats in the carbs wearing oval shaped ever so often ,dropping my mileage . I usually get 52mpg and when it drops in the mid 40's I know its time. I've had the starting on one cylinder since new and found the ignition system to be the weak link in the bike. I think it needs more spark from the coils and if there's a fix I'd love to hear about it. I've owned several bikes over the years as I'm 69 yrs old. The TDM is by far the best all around bike I've had and I've ridden a lot of new adventurer tourers that I wouldn't trade mine for. Look forward to reading the forum. Dude, try Pro Speed exhaust in Cardiff, for 90 quid they chopped off my collector box and made a beautifull Y shaped bit of pipe.

So you ended up with a 2 into 1? Any tuning issues as a result?

Can't find anyone local to me that will be able to mess about with making exhaust bits mad.gif

Nah, got the original end cans on there which were fine, so I have a 2 into 1 into 2 set up, next time i'm over me garage i'll get a pic of it and post it. The guys at pro speed are mint, i think whatever problem you give to them exhaust wise they'll sort it. When the stock end cans on mine finally give up the ghost i'm going to get them to make me some new ones.

Hi Kahn

Would'nt removing the hole collectorbox make the bike VERY LOUD!!? since there'll be no noise reduction at all then?
I also have the stock exhaust and I can't hear the damn thing, which often makes me try to change to 6th(!) gear... rolleyes.gif
So I'll be interrested to see how your drilling will come out.

Any idea why Yamaha made the collector and mufflers in one (big)piece? honestly it's the biggest part on the bike, after the frame - it would take a rather big box to send a replacement by mail from Japanesia.
