I replaced the fuel pump diaphragm with some OHP film the other day. :)  The old diaphragm was domed and as a result was contacting the pump casing so I thought I'd have a go at using the arseytate stuff.

Also found an easy peasy way of making the diaphragm.  Remove the six longer bolts, remove cover, remove old diaphragm, slide a page of OHP where diaphragm sits, line up the pump cover noggins, press cover into place using a firm grip, pierce film where bolts go with a small screwdriver, push the bolts into bolt holes, tighten bolts then cut the film around the pump. :D  Saves A LOT of farting about sketching out and trying to punch holes where they should go.

Pump seems to work fine, time will tell if the film I used is thick enough or not.  I've a feeling the stuff I used, 100 micron, will be too thin.  Will get some 250 micron film next and make a noo wan.

Have the same feeling, too. After making a new diaphragm, the pump seeemed to work really well early in the summer but starting after a few days parked got increasingly harder in the autumn. Thinking of mounting an electric one.

Yeah, I've also got a leccy fuel pump that I could fit.  Prefer a manual pump though so will stick with trying some thicker film first.  Any idea what the thickness of the film you used is Bjorge ?

I will have time next week to measure my old pump arsey tate. Was on boike for prolly 20000 miles. Only changed cous I found my new pump :-)

Will also have a dig for the arsey tate stash I have somewhere! . Someone might have an unfitted one from the batch I made. Think rally and a few others had Juan.

I just replaced mine with another vacuum operated pump.  I figured the original lasted over 40K miles, it was a good investment.  About $50 on Amazon (search for a Polaris fuel pump since they used them on their snow mobiles https://www.amazon.c...laris fuel pump).  Chinese knockoffs on Amazon are under $15.

Let us know how it performs all round (high speed etc, delivery rate correct)
They're available through uk polaris agent at a surprising £49. Never had any trouble yet but at that price it might be worth having one on the shelf or even under my seat.

Yep - it is the same as OEM.  For whatever reason, Yamaha doesn't stock it, but I guess snowmobile folks are more demanding so Polaris still stocks the same pump.  I have had mine in for almost two years with no problems.  I don't expect any problems either given it is identical to the OEM pump that was still working after 40K.  As for the $15 knockoff pumps, I'm not sure I would be as confident on those.  Although not a bad price for a back up.

Thanks for the link. Part number is the same as so I guess they've just increased in price meantime. The link mentions pipe fiddling if used on a mk2. No point me carrying a spare for distance riding if it's not a straight fit. Can you remember what's needed to get it on to a mk2 piping ?

Personally I wouldn't carry a spare as mechanical pamp so reliable and tends to let go gently if it does .... And can easily be repaired with a thin sheet of arsey tate which would be much easier to lug around.

I did fit a mk2 pump to a mk1 at one point. Think one (or maybe both) of the poipes is a diff diameter and maybe also a slightly diff orientation of where poipes join the pamp. Sorry very vague ...cannae quite remember.

All my starting problems on the MkI were when the fuel level was below the carb float chambers. If it wouldn't start, putting more fuel in would solve. I replaced the pump with a Polaris one. Can't recall if it cured the low fuel level problem. Didn't have a fuel starvation problem with either pump when the engine was running, even when switched to reserve.
The conclusion I came to was that the pump was not a positive displacement type so let fuel flow past when the tank level was above the float chambers but became necessary when the level was below. The fuel flow is dictated by the floats and their needles, not the pump which merely maintains the pressure head.

My diy jobbie is on the left, as you might see, it's gone all crinkley and misshapen.  Have now put the original diaphragm back in after the pump failed.

Think the film might not have been ohp film, or it was ohp film that was too thin.

I think the original film is mylar, not acetate. You can get mylar sheets quite easily

Heres one source of mylar, stencil sheet, which is solvent resistant

http://www.ebay.co.u...scAAOSwPyxTxiUL

Can't remember how thick the film in the pump is, 190 micron (above) might be too thick, but it's also commonly and more cheaply available as 125mic or 80 mic

One reason why some OHP material works and not others, might be because some are acetate (not solvent resistant for long durations), while others are polyester (similar to mylar) films

True mylar film is polyester based, very solvent proof and tear resistant https://www.google.c...2_uAFiA&cad=rja

Here's an A6 sized sheet (large enough to do a pump)  125mic thick, for 99p....

Food for thought, cheers FS.  The 100 micron film I used was deffo thinner than the original diaphragm.

Just tooked apart me ole pamp SR.i handily wrote on dare rebuilt in May 2012. Arsey Tate looks fine very slight domeification starting after I estimate 12000 miles. No signs of melting or other problemos.

Just wish I could find the bloody sheets I have somewhere!!!

Not got any measurin stick on me but will measure tickness when I can and report back if useful?
