I'm thinking by now you need the head off just to pacify your own head but can't help thinking you really need a fresh head to look at it first, it's horribly easy to go blind to something obvious especially when you get pissed off with trying to find the issue, it happens very easily.

See where your coming from Dave and am well and truly pissed off, wish i was'nt such a stubborn bugger but, the crankshaft should not be moving at any time when setting the valves, i've had the cams off and back on and in between rotated 360, even rotated 180 on the off chance i boogered that up without forcing the cams or caps anywhere, summit fishy i think....

I'll ask me mate to pop over next weekend, he's bang on with mechanics and TDM's, i still think the heads coming off though...

Swmbo told me to buy another and part this out

I was just kidding, it is a H mark.

Hey if Nadi's paying, get another bike mate,  them Guzzi V85TT's are peachy. :D  Can't see you parting it out tbh.

I remember fitting a replacement head gasket on the mk2a after the Wemoto one leaked smurfs.  Pretty straightforward with the motor still in the bike, trickiest bit was getting the head back on and compressing the rings.  That said, me and my knees were a good bit younger.

I know the Guzzi is gorgeous but she was'nt being generous matey, it would be coming out of me own money

Yea removing the head should'nt be a problem i can wup the carbs off pretty sharp, disconnect the oil pipe, throw the camshafts out to make it easier, just hope the pistons are okay, can turn the crank fine plugs out and cams out ?? compressing the rings is a tough one but Dave's got big hairy hands to do it, he'll have to come up for that...

Wish you were nearer, it's bugging me too.

Me an all Dave, dont understand how i may have bent a valve/s, big bang back awhile with the mk2a carbs or maybe i boogered summit when i redid the timing before hand, it's a mystery, gotta fix it i spose...

Head off, compressing rings??? Am I missing something? Head off should not involve removing pistons surely?

I've not had one apart and also quite pissed now but things are not making sense to me.

Also getting really curious and wish I was closer and could take a peek but not a chance from south cambs. especially when the pubs are open. :drinks:

Holy moly, I'm getting all confused myself, not even had a drink yet.   I think it was when I rebuilt the mk2a engine that I installed the barrels and head with the bottom half of the engine fitted to the bike.

Well i pulled the head today and barring one exhaust valve which needed a tiny tap with a bit of wood i've not found anything to explain the problem..

Pistons not marked

med_gallery_18822_394_488586.jpg

Exhaust valves coking up after 350 miles

med_gallery_18822_394_150909.jpg

I can place the exhaust cam in the Cylinder head and rotate the cam shaft so that the timing marks line up with the crankcase, which in turn opens the valves on cylinder 2 ?  cant do that when it's all in situ and of course that wont allow me to set the timing either as too much resistance, i think i may remove the exhaust valves and check out the valve springs, they were re-used as were showing in spec.

Quite confused now actually

Yeah, sounds about right opening the valves on no.2.  Wonder if the exhaust valve you had to tap cudda had anything to do with it not rotating ?

Confusing indeed. Is Dave coming over this weekend Dabs ?

Was'nt much of a tap to be honest, i could push all the others a little wid me thumb, but possibly, have the tools so i will take em out and look see...

Not got hold of Dave but nowt for him to see really now the heads off, i initially wondered if a valve was rocking a piston and moving the crank a bit, that's the big mystery innit, something making the crank move ever so slightly ? Not a mark on the pistons though.. hm, wondering if the rotor has slipped a tad ?

Have to see if removing the exhaust valves shows anything as well..

No gaskets in stock either at Fowlers, anyone know where else i can get oem in the uk..

Allus good to have a second opinion/looksie and as you said, he's spot on with mechanics and lectrics.  Dunno how the rotor could have slipped a tad, woodruff key and huge bolt holding it there.

Can't help thinking that not tightening up the cam caps to spec might result in the cam not turning freely.  I'll have a scout ferra oem head gasket.

Fowlers have the head gasket for a 95 tdm as 4NX-11181-00    https://www.fowlersp...view/4NX1118100

CMSL also have the early mk1 head gasket as superseded with the 4NX-11181-00  Soooo, why don't Fowlers have the superseded wan for the early mk1's ?
