No top box, I see. I wonder if the order was cancelled because of the top box problem that's been reported. It's almost tempting to offer them 9 grand in cash (er, if I actually had it) and see whether there's a bite. At that price, a bike like this starts to look good value.

I'd be interested if it wasn't so frigging heavy. I'm not saying it should have sportsbike power, but when the power to weight ratio is almost the same as the 9er, which is getting on for a 10 year old design, I think they've missed the point.

Why the hell does it weigh 250kg? How on earth is it soo heavy?

If they to a TDM version at about 180kg, christ that' be a corking bike!

Just read a review in Ride magazine. They said the weight means that with 108 bhp on tap there isn't a lot in reserve when overtaking and if you want to feel that there is, then you have to change down. Also, ground clearance when leant over sounds a bit problematic. Imho, they could do with that engine in a leaner, meaner machine intended only for tarmac and at well under 10 grand. Oh well, we can all dream.

Why is that unrealistic?
My Fireblade has a 4 cylinder engine, released in 1992 and weighs 180kg, the TDM900 weighs 190kg

So why on earth does the S10 weigh over 250kg?

cos a TDM weighs a fair bit more than 190kg and the new S10 prolly weighs so mush due to the gubbins to run the linked/combined brakes and the fact they didn't try too hard with weight saving.

Just went by the official specs, I know it's dry weight.....

Is the 250kg of the S10 wet or dry?

I agree, it's too heavy for it's intended use IMO.

Even the 2010 XTZ660 Tenere, a single cylinder "dirt" bike, weighs 209kg wet, only 12kgs less than the TDM900. Bike mag reviews bang on about how it doesn't feel that heavy cos it's well balanced - but I'm not sure if the Yamaha design team thinks mass centralisation is more important than overall weight? Sure it's a good design ideal, but the overall weight needs to stay down too. Momentum can hurt you.

Build a 210kg TDM900 with XTZ660 forks, swing-arm and shock, decent two into one exhaust with a lightweight muffler, and put more crash proof fairings/headlight on it, and you would be getting close to the ideal long distance dirt tourer. Something in-between the 660 and the 1200, like the BMW F800GS (207kg/85hp) but a Yamaha.....

that's my bugbear, bleedin' crappy, fragile, badly (over-complicated and fiddlely) fitted plastic. Not just on the TDM, but most bikes these days. I had the same problem on my Transalp. It just doens't make sense to have a dualsport that has such easily breakable bits, clocks and lights included.

Precisely why my backside twitches likes a rabbits nose on washed out gravelly tracks. If the bike goes down it will be expensive...

Just my 2 cents,
I have gone from a 2003 TDM900 that was a darn nice bike to a new S10 with absolutely not one regret, it may be a heavy bike to pickup and carry through deep water but on any of the riding i have done on road or off road it feels lots lighter to ride than the mighty TDM, this is about bike #38 FOR ME AND BY FAR THE BEST i know of lots of comments about non switchable ABS etc but this is the only bike i have had that on a gravel road at 120kmph you can grab the front brake as hard as possible and the bike WILL pull up dead straight in what seems a very short time and distance. Traction control is brilliant and i am sure this is one bike i will NEVER sell, this one is definately a keeper. My only complaint is not with the bike but Yamaha Australia as they have been piss poor in getting accessories for the bike to the dealers, I have been waiting 2 months just for a bash plate and still waiting. Maybe they could have made it lighter but then the recalls for Final drive failures, breaking axles, frames etc etc etc would have tarnished their image.

Cheers Rick

I'd agree with that Rick you ride it, you don't carry it and once on the move with the low centre of gravity you shouldn't be able to tell the difference in weight. Still way too expensive though for what you get, I'm afraid we bikers (no offence meant there Dandy old bean) are screwed at every opportunity by motorcycle manufacturers and suppliers!!! Here endeth the lesson.... nurse is it time for my meds yet wacko.gif ???

Apparently the prices in the Old Dart are quite a bit higher than other regions of the world but here is Australia us convicts can buy them at quite a competative price.

now that is unrealistic.

KTM 990 Adventure is 209kg, (199kg dry) but is very low centre of gravity. The fuel tanks are at the sides of the engine, the battery between the bash plate and the engine. 106bhp.

I would have thought it might be realistic weight if you're pay Ł14K for a bike to even have a titanium frame and bits
