It's a revelation - I know I'm thick, but why didn't Yamaha realise this - is there an after effect that we don't know about...?

Should have seen this and sorted the issue sooner but have now rectified that situation.

Mine is a 58 plate and I've mentioned at both yearly services that it was lumpy and prone to stalling whilst filtering/plodding at slow speed. The idle switch was adjusted, this however (option 1) has made it a different bike!

To be honest it was the slow speed stuff that had made me think about moving the TDM until now

I had the recall performed on my bike a few weeks ago and it is a little smoother again - though I couldn't find any sticker to say the recall work had been done on the bike so no photo.

Yeah, that very annoying. Mine still does this occasionally and I've done both the mod and had the TPS changed (though I often wonder if they only said they did it to save on labour, being as the dealer I had it done at has a crap reputation).

I'm going to give this a go, probably procedure C, a steel ball in the vacuum line.

At low revs I get 'kangaroo' throttle, really jerky. I ride around the issue and use the rear brake to smooth things out. But it is a pain in the arse really and other than the noisy screen it's one of the few negatives.

Mine was still prone to stalling after option 1 mod. Have recently increased to CO2 mixutre by +5 on each cylinder and also increased the idle to 1200 rpm. No more stalling.

I need to check my idle again, it was around 12k. Don't think I'll mess with the co2 though.

I've only had my 9er for 4 weeks, and the first thing I did was mod the airbox using option 1. Now to be honest I'd obviously not got used to the feel of the bike before I'd moded it, so didn't really know if it had made much difference unsure.gif . Anyway it was still not that smooth at the lower revs so I've now done option 2 and it does feel better now excl.gif tongue.gif Anyone know how that could be?. blink.gif

Done the mod, took less than five minutes!
Removed the vacuum pipe from the throttle body, inserted a small bung up the vacuum line, re-attached to throttle body, jobs a carrot!

What a difference! I resisted temptation to do this before now as I didn't think it would make such a difference and Yamaha do know how to build bikes. On the Germany trip, fully loaded two up slow speed manoeuvres were a bit of a PITA, so I decided to give this a go.

Bike now pulls from 1500 rpm with a steady throttle and is usable between 2 and 3 thousand RPM.

Well happy, if you've not done this, do it now!

Hi guys, just done the airbox mod to my 2008 900. I used option 1 from the diagram and found that the low down jerkiness has dropped down to about 2k. I am told that it's behaving like a v twin and that's what they do. I found that the mod has made a difference, as before I just could not get along with it. Going to take it on a good run now and see how she performs.

Completed option 1 on my 2008 9er, it has made a difference but! I still can't ride the bike at low speeds. This is my first TDM and reading all the hype I thought I was on to a winner. Taking slow corners is a nightmare. If I hit a bump in the road the bike bucks like it's in a rodeo comp due to movement of the throttle. I have Fuel silencers fitted and wonder if replacing them with the standard silencers will make it better.

has anyone any opinions on this.

Dont see why the exhausts should make a difference,,,, have the throttle bodies balanced per jbx's guide,,, its an uncomplicated job and made a differnce to mine as mine was still a bit ropey after the airbox mod,,,,, have heart you can get it sorted,, the bike will be brilliant once you sort this issue.

I did option 1 of the airbox mod very soon after I'd got my 2008 9er and didn't know if any difference had really been made. I decided to do option 2 as well and that seems to of done the trick. I have since found my bike coasting along in 30 & 40mph limits and have less than 2500rpm showing and it seems smooth enough for me! I'm not sure why doing options 1 & 2 have made the difference, because I thought just doing one would work dunno.gif excl.gif

Before the turns you could be in a lower gear as Relying on the twins to pull you yeahyeahyeah.gif out of turns from low revs is of no use. I have the same problem and I removed the whole feckin regulator. I did notice it got a bit worse when I put the new zorst's on.

I did the airbox mod some weeks ago and whilst not night and day better, it was better. Soon after I added a K&N and a new set of cans and it worsened somewhat again. I'm living with it and and have sorta learned how to dial it out and keep it smooth, but saying that the jerkyness still catches me out at times...
