The idea had crossed my mind Ken, in fact talked it over with aircooled as he's got a tig but he's far to busy, then i forgot, however it was all looking good when i inspected it, should it happen in the future well, guess i can always change frame colour eh

So Cliff did that rotor come off in the end and was it corrosion holding it in situ?

Been busy then. Good to see. Some of those valve heads are well pitted eh, looks like rust one the one in the workbench, wonder how that happened ?
Lemme know if a standard oil seal will replace the ones from the rear caliper halves please, ta.
Keep up the good work.

there is a rear caliper rebuild kit available which includes that small rubber O ring seal which was previously 'not available'. The kit i bought includes stainless steel pistons.

It looks like scale and it's rock hard, unless it's carbon burned white !! some of the valves are pitted, may have to clean up the other set and see what them is loike, defo dont want to be buying fookin new ones at 50 splongs a go, because the whole lot may as well get done and that's a bit rich even for me.

Will have a look at these pistons and see if they cant be polished, otherwise more spendies, wont shift without air though, the small seals are flat sided looking at them so dont think you could put a regular seal instead..

Just had another ganders at the valves and the pitting is pretty much restricted to the head of the valve, the seats really look okay to my eye but not been near them while cleaning up, one inlet valve was a bit sticky in it's guide when i oiled em up for the wibbly wobbly test, will find time to clean up the other set and see if any are a bit better.
Also the springs are all in spec albeit slightly different measurements and a couple have a very minimal slight lean of pizza going on i think ill take the best of the 20 i've got to use, if were buying new springs they would have to bed in anyhoos, or am oi barking up the wrong tree !! I know it's generally advised to put everything back together in the same place but if some new parts were needed that's scuppered innit.
When the head comes back prolly best to give it a fine lap and lash all the gubbins back in with the camshafts and see what the clearances are like, then take it from that point..

I've got some flat o rings in my o ring kit.
Yeah, smooth valve tops help reduce carbon build up so any non- pitted swapsies would be good. A gentle lap in and they should beef wine. Swapping springs is ok too, they don't need breaking in when new.

Now the valves are nice and clean it's quite easy to see the dots on em, middle valves have 1 dot and all outers 2 dots, nowt i can see on the exhaust valves.
Did you fine lap only on yours mucka, i'll post a pic when the heads back from vapourising, then off to crack test, arse way around but did'nt want to wait twice for vapouriseiringing.....

From memory I think I used both the coarse and fine lapping pastes you get in the tin. You might only need a fine lap though.

All the friction and steel plates out of spec except for the 1st slick steel plate, Haynes mentions the last friction plate should have a hole in a tab which has to be placed in-situ, aint got one a them, guess they dont come with aftermarket kits then ?? and guess it's not such a big deal either !

Need to sort some seals out now, o'rings in particular, plenty of cheaper options around for o'rings but knowing what's proper appropriate is a bit of a shitfield, so many choices and will prolly end up being a humungous fowlers list for the most part

I notice the blue spot calipers, did you change the master cylinder to a 14mm bore or keep the original 15.8mm one?
The reason I ask is I just picked up my first tdm and the front brake is rock hard as soon as I touch the lever (works fine though) whereas my fazer thou with blue spots has a lovely progressive feel to it with much more control but has the smaller bore cylinder so I'm thinking of changing it, my hands are not that big (I'm only a squirt) so I find the fazer brake much nicer to use and there are a few about on fleabay.
