I am sure you are not in the moood for that or indeed advice at the moment but when you feel loike diagnosing (even if you decide to break the rest) then do it methodically and check everything as you would with it going together.
Depends on circumstances I know but if you are happy with all the udder bits, I wouldn't scrap the booger. Just needs an enjun/any enjun/that enjun sorting is all.

Do you think you went far enough to run it out of oil? Pretty sure you'd get more than one clonk once that big end suffers.
Fingers crossed it's an easy fix.

Aye daps, a bit of time to think on it, another engine has crossed my mind but i would be nervous about buying an unknown item, some people will sell you anything.....
Whatever i decide i'll want to know where the damage is so even if i break it i'll have a look at the engine..

Was more than one clonk Dave, i'll eventually have a look, will see what it's like turning the engine by hand, likely drop the sump cover and shine a torch up there for a look see and remove the valve cover, had no spillage anywhere..

Just to back up on what others are saying. Take chill pill/beer break and when yer minds less befunddled go back to it and treat it as a hobby, it's not your main form of transport after all, yes it can be frustrating not riding and I'm sure if it's major engine out job takes yer time and don't let get to you, do what you can when you can.
I've had my MG in bits for two years and it took ages to get running right even with knowledgeable peeps helping. I had everything from carbs, ignition and exhaust apart 4 or 5 times before it was sussed (bloody misaligned butterfly's in the carbs by 0.5mm if that, and jets not sitting right). Yes it cost a few bob in gaskets jets etc but if it got to me I just shoved back in the garage until I had the dosh and the motivation back.
Hope you get it going, and I'm sure you'll be beaming when it is, as you did it yersen.
Don't forget we is here to help, technically and emotionally.
Bondy.

Cheers bondy, i'm not usually one to give up, dunno if you've been through the thread but plenty of frustration already before this happened and had to take my time between work and weather to get sorted, i'm just festering at the moment and looking at other bikes could happily buy another but have a lot invested in the mk1 so some careful thinking to do, if i had space for 2 bikes i would be like a pig in shit, ride one and fix the other....think i know what i'll end up doing, maybe just have to convince myself !

What bikes you been looking at Dabs ?
If you could store the mk1 somewhere for free for a year or two, you wouldn't lose any investment if you got it going at a later date. Take a break from backyard fettlin' buy a bike and enjoy riding again.

Been looking at smaller cc bikes now from 650 and under, keep getting drawn back to the Himmy, reckon i could live with slowing down and just meandering along nicely, watched a vid of 2 blokes doing the Alps and one of em 2 up on them, around 70mpg and easy maintenance to boot...only looking as i'm pissed off very undecided..
Free storage would be a good solution but if i get bored soon i might just have a look at it to try and work out wot's wot... through all the moaning and frustration it at least keeps me busy as i'm not riding..

I haven't seen mudlark on for a while to see how his has been but 2 other people I know have had plenty of niggles. Ignition switches failing, folk seals, bolts snapping and having to do the steering head bearings at low miles. Not the best build quality.
Mine you the Jap stuff isn't as good as it was either.

Not looked at the interceptors then ? 47 hp is enough for an auld guy
I quite like the look of them, but haven't ridden one. According to what I've read the are very popular with very good sales figures, in this country.
All the YouTube video's, I've seen have been very positive. However a nice CB500 would be good. Good power, light weight, supposed to handle well and have good brakes or and SV650, much the same
