Yeah I pretty much agree on that, 'cause the older I get the more I realise the less I know for sure. laugh.gif

I will get the TDM Dyno'd though just to satisfy my own curiosity.

What I like about this place is we can all throw our two cents / pence worth in & generally something useful comes out of it. wink.gif

Thanks all - seems to beside chaging the oil not that much difference - Just don't be to gentle - my usual riding style biggrin.gif

It will give you a very loose/general indication as to how much power yer boike makes and the fuelling characteristics, but unless you had it dyno'd new at the showroom before you wheeled it off their forecourt and now you have put some miles on it and have it dyno'd again it will tell you not alot atall atall excl.gif basically we need 10 people to buy new 900's and everyone to run it in differently and put some miles on (say 10k) then they are all dyno'd on the same day on the same dyno, that would prolly give some interesting results maybe ??

spyball alarm/immob, bluespot brake calipers and Stainless hoses, Fournales air adjustable shock with Remote Resevoir, forks raised 10mm thru yokes, racetech linear fork springs in 15 wt oil, Kappa wingrack/luggage, heated grips, Kedo handguards, dual heat controller to power heated jacket liner and or pants!!, Stebel 136DB horn, K&N air filter, colour matched Baglux tank cover (magnetic tank bag modified to fit cover), osram +50% headloight bulbs, headlight protector,"NitramSpecial" parking loight, tail light indicators all running on LED's & incorporate "Lite Buddies", MK7 Scottoiler fitted, taller screen, 2-2 stainless steel CCC's, Devil stainless down pipes. MKI Renntec engine crash bars & sump guard.
engine changed july 2007 on a dyno run it made 79.1BHP / Torque 59.9Had a brief flirtation with a 1999 MKIIa but it blew an exaust valve on the M5 so was sold on to be repaired.

As for Dapleb & no evidence. I still say look at Motoman's Photos. What would he have to gain from giving BAD advise apart from threat of death from
very upset bikers! Quite the contrary, from what I read they support his method.

Over on the Thumpertalk forum, specifically the DRZ400 section, the moderator owns a bike engine tuning business.

He lambastes people for not doing it the mototune way
He swears by it. He has the pistons to prove it.

Owners who are having oil burning issues, he gets them to post up pics of their pistons and you can see the blow by of the rings exactly like motoman says

Then there are others who have posted pics of their piston coz they are doing engine mods, who have done it the motoman way and sure enough the piston skirt look like new.

Indeed he can tell which motors have been broken in too gently

Now I 'm an engineer by trade, and it makes sense to me.
If an engine is going to make max power then it needs a good ring seal. FACT.
The late John Robinson (from PB mag) explains this is what is needed in his engine tuning books from the mid eighties

Be under no illusion, if you have a tight clearance in your engine from a manufacturing defect, no amount of gentle running in will fix it.

Yes it is possible to over do it
To avoid warranty claims the manufacturers advocate a simple, safe break in.
Not the best, but certainly prevents warranty claims

Just imagine if they put it in the hand book to be agressive and stress the engine
there would bound to be some who trash it form cold
They don't want to be forking out for this stuff, hence they are over cautious.

Ever seen a car at the end of the assembly line, on the rolling road?
if you think you need to baby you engine, it would open your eyes.

Not sure but it better have generous temperature reserves for those who are planning to fry their spanking new engines rolleyes.gif

Bikes come from the factory dry, (no oil no petrol) so it could be whatever the dealer has available. unsure.gif

Most likely it will be cheap oil to maximize the dealers profit...
that can be good since cheap oil generally has no additives to worry about.

(Whatever it is it will only be there for the break in (600 miles) and then you can pick some good stuff.)

I have been using semi-synth since new (16 years) and no oil problems.

Firstly NORTY. I'd say ya won't go too far wrong with your chosen approach. The only reason you put EL CHEAPO car engine oil in for the first 100k is exactly that, 'cause it's cheap &
your gunna chuck it out after an hour or so riding.
The major difference between synthetic vs mineral oil, straight mineral oil wears out alot faster ( breaks down under heat & pressure, etc ) so should be changed more often. smile.gif

tdm850rider. you likely wouldn't have any problems with semi-synthetic oils, but from what I've read you're just paying a premium for something not much better that standard mineral oil.

robelset. I can't say I've ever noticed or heard of a new engine running significantly hotter than an older one. doubtfull.gif

I'll be happy if my Dyno results are better than Yamaha spec's.

you get my drift with my comment on running in 10 bikes though ??? rolleyes.gif basically your dyno results showing less or more than Yamaha's specs don't mean jack but they will give you that satisfied warm feeling if they are higher than Yamaha's claimed outputs.
