Got the other easy bit clutch basket nut orf too smile.gif

Yeah, I know....... The legendary rotor of doom awaits me ph34r.gif

and it'll have to bloody well wait too !

Now then, if oi were to make me own puller, what would be the optimal thread pitch for the centre bolt ?

I was thinkin' of using an 18mm dia bolt but looks like BrianVG used a bigger wan unsure.gif

Use a fine pitch like 1.0 or 1.25. its like using a thin wedge less torque gives more push.

If you are buying a bolt more likely will be 1.5 or 2.0

I used one of these on the 900 but made a set of rotor bolts to fit.

Teased the bolt out using the 19mm wheel brace and my handlebar extensionerer ! Only thing I could find to slip over the brace was me spare set of handlebars.

Did I mention the snow ?

Ian ,measure the diameter of that bolt that came out of that hole will yer and pm me, I'll get on me lathe and make you a steel protector for it. Also can you tell me the thread in the three open holes looks like 8mm same as the 900 but I need to know, I got the itch for making bits with all this snow....

I bet your shed is nice and warm...

Thanks for that me lathe will be annoying the chavs next door tomorrow. laugh.gif

The 900 rotor looks almost identical so I'll make the 8mm high tensile 12.9 strength bolts to fit that, plus a little bit for 'adjustment'

12mm fine pitch is er 1.5 so I'll make the protector with that then.

Ok mate no problem, haven't cut the thread yet. so its extra fine then. make a note of that in the 850 files.
Looking at the pics of the 'official' tools its a plain boss made to fit the root of the thread anyway. I will make two one plain one threaded, you try them out and tell us which works the best. they are only made of 16mm steel bar, cheap as chips.
When we have the info add it to the KB.

Well I used mine to get me niner one off, warmed it with a heat gun in the centre and applied pressure and sharp tap with a copper mallet. The puller is americano so all the bolts they supply are UNF, I have some 60mm M8 allen screws and washers that are very strong 12.9's and die cut threads for good engagement I can send you three if you need them.

Lee H

cool.gif Noice wan Lee, thankyou very muchly !

Do you think I'm gonna need them extra strong 60mm M8 allen bolts ?

I'm gonna buy the harmonic puller and get an additional 5mm steel plate with holes made to help strengthen it.

Yes got three for yer, some high forces will be used on only three M8 bolts you need good threads and lots of tensile strength for safety. If anything broke it would twist and most likely damage the crank or rotor, causing much lamentation, bad language and throwing bits round the workshop.

Just a pic of the tools I use to hold the rotor and the clutch basket of the 900, the 850 will be much the same, the rotor tool is actually called a sheave holder from the days when factories ran on big belts and lineshafting. Flat alternator belt is nice n grippy for this job. The original bit was a plastic sleeved metal spring steel strip.

The clutch tool can hold sprockets and gears too. You could make one from 6mm x 20mm flat steel bar quite easily and weld a nut on part of it for the lock. Just find someone who has a big vice.

oooooh yeah, Real tools smile.gif Makes my wooden block and big screwdriver look quite primitive laugh.gif
Although I did notice Haynes also used a wooden block to remove the rotor nut.

Regarding the clutch tool, I know a man wot might have half a cake trolley, with wheels no less !

I doubt he's got a big vice though, being a hard-workin' family man an at !

Seriously though, I've seen the sheave holders and wasn't inspired with the plastic coated metal band but your mod looks to have sorted that out smile.gif Reckon I'll get me one.
