My other thread showed the issues I had with choosing poorly when doing a DIY diaphragm swap on the OEM vacuum pump (material failure). So I recently went out in search of the Polaris replacement, and found one local dealer who actually had one in stock for a reasonable price.
I explained to the parts manager that this was going on a '92 TDM850 for around half the price that Yamaha wanted for basically the same OEM pump. At that point, she asked why I didn't just rebuild the original. I mentioned that Yamaha and Taiyo Giken didn't offer a rebuild kit... and her immediate response was
"that's strange, because I have a Polaris parts number showing up in the system that indicates a diaphragm and gasket set for this exact pump... I don't have one in stock, but they show a kit in the system.." As you can imagine, my bug-eyed response was one of complete surprise... She spun the computer around and showed me the exploded diagram and a Polaris parts # of 3088170 that looked to include the pumper diaphragm and gaskets from the pumper chamber as well as the diaphragm and gasket for the transfer chamber. Although it didn't look to include the check-valve pieces...
She then asked be if I would like to order just the rebuild kit... at a whopping price of approx. $46/us (WOW...) and wait 4-6 days for delivery or take the complete pump in stock for $57/us...
No brainer... I left with the pump... and a parts # for possible rebuild kits for the 2 (yes.. count 'em...TWO...) OEM pumps I now have in the parts bin.
Gotta go pop the tank and get the fuel pump swapped out... If this works, I'll then start a thread on the completely over-engineered DIY carb sync board I fabricated during 4 days of nothing but rain...
But I HAD to pass this one along... Polaris Part #3088170... Here's a link with the exploded diagram...:
http://www.powerspor...32AA/parts.htmlI'm sure with some looking, it could probably be found cheaper on-line... Heck, I was actually thinking about sending an email to Winderosa gaskets in Maine about possibly developing a rebuild kit for the OEM pump... they offer inexpensive rebuild kits for the Mikuni pumps. I may still follow through with this idea... but only after I get my ride sorted though.
