A rebuild kit is the first thing I went looking for, but all leads came up N/A. I also looked at some of the Polaris models too, but only new complete pumps. huh.gif

That small rectangular 14 liter fuel pump on the link you put up is the one I bought early on. I got onto it from a previous TDM owner over on AdvRider who used one and it worked fine for him. I decided not to use it, because it didn't have the fuel shut off valve and I wanted to keep all the ports on the petcock side like the stock one. I also wasn't sure of the original pumps output and though it might be a bit higher than 14.

Thanks for the help my pump showed up last week installing next weekend. In general I favor stock over mods unless the mod is an proven performer- like adding electronic ignition to a CB or something. The way I look at it a fuel pump just needs to deliver the correct amount of pressure to the carbs, whether it does that by electrical or vacuum pressure is immaterial to me.

Now when it comes to modding the appearance I feel differently, but that is a story for another thread. laugh.gif

Again thanks OP for all your work and help.

I just did my fuel pump and it is way better at starting, idling cold and throttle response. I read quite a bit about this here and was frankly skeptical. My experience with fuel pumps has been entirely on 4 wheeled vehicles and mechanical or electrical fuel pumps either work or do not work. I replaced mine mostly because it looked pretty old and as I want to moto in out of the way places I am trying to replace things likely to strand me out there.

Yesterday I replaced the pump as an afterthought. My main goal for the day was to take pictures of the swmotech rack so that the somewhere there would be some directions in English,. but I have the pump and while I am farting around in the garage I might as well and so I did... and what an amazing difference! No hard start, no missing at idle when cold, no "on off switch" feeling on the throttle. I took mine apart and the membrane was indeed badly stretched, and the lines were full of white powdery crud. From the pictures in this thread my guess was that it was the original pump.

I was thinking about the why of this as I was drinking a beer and letting the bike idle for half an hour. (I wanted to test the fan on the radiator as this was the first day we have had near 70) and as best I can figure when the diaphram warps the pump has to suck harder to get the same amount of fuel, which robs the carbs of the vacuum they need do their thing. so in situations where a strong "pull" from the carbs is needed (like when cold, going up a long grade or 1/4 throttle the fuel pump steals enough suction that the carbs cannot force gas through the needle- so you got WOT, create enough suction to feed both the carbs and the pump and suddenly you feel like your doing a carrier take off, Now it accelerates smoooooth from 1500 to the redline in any gear with new fuel pump.

My other thread showed the issues I had with choosing poorly when doing a DIY diaphragm swap on the OEM vacuum pump (material failure). So I recently went out in search of the Polaris replacement, and found one local dealer who actually had one in stock for a reasonable price.

I explained to the parts manager that this was going on a '92 TDM850 for around half the price that Yamaha wanted for basically the same OEM pump. At that point, she asked why I didn't just rebuild the original. I mentioned that Yamaha and Taiyo Giken didn't offer a rebuild kit... and her immediate response was "that's strange, because I have a Polaris parts number showing up in the system that indicates a diaphragm and gasket set for this exact pump... I don't have one in stock, but they show a kit in the system.."

As you can imagine, my bug-eyed response was one of complete surprise... She spun the computer around and showed me the exploded diagram and a Polaris parts # of 3088170 that looked to include the pumper diaphragm and gaskets from the pumper chamber as well as the diaphragm and gasket for the transfer chamber. Although it didn't look to include the check-valve pieces...

She then asked be if I would like to order just the rebuild kit... at a whopping price of approx. $46/us (WOW...) and wait 4-6 days for delivery or take the complete pump in stock for $57/us...

No brainer... I left with the pump... and a parts # for possible rebuild kits for the 2 (yes.. count 'em...TWO...) OEM pumps I now have in the parts bin.

Gotta go pop the tank and get the fuel pump swapped out... If this works, I'll then start a thread on the completely over-engineered DIY carb sync board I fabricated during 4 days of nothing but rain...

But I HAD to pass this one along... Polaris Part #3088170... Here's a link with the exploded diagram...:

http://www.powerspor...32AA/parts.html

I'm sure with some looking, it could probably be found cheaper on-line... Heck, I was actually thinking about sending an email to Winderosa gaskets in Maine about possibly developing a rebuild kit for the OEM pump... they offer inexpensive rebuild kits for the Mikuni pumps. I may still follow through with this idea... but only after I get my ride sorted though.

Had a quick scan and found a local vendorrrrr, £39 (incl VAT and 10% discount) and less than £3 of fuel away. :badgerrock:

If anyone is interested oi can enquire aboot a bigger discount for bulk order but I suspect since the pamps last about 20years, there won't be many takers.

Dappers me old badger your a gent. I dont think I have a problem at the mo but when I opened the old fuel pump up the diaphram  looked old and tired, Much like myself. I wanted a link to a polaris seller just in case the worst happend and it when phut.. If you have the time one of your lamitate prototypes would be well received. I think Im going to replace all the fuel pipes whilst I'm at it as it looks cheap enough to do.
